Factual Accuracy[edit]

It appears that ministers met at the home of a Reverend Samuel Russel (note spelling) to donate books to the new school's library, but it doesn't appear that this person was involved in the university's founding itself. In response: Consult the book YALE by Brooks Mather Kelley ISBN 0300078439 providing details of Samuel Russell's particpation. Anyway it is generally agreed there were 10 founders, and this reference cites him as one. Cdirkwiki1 23:38, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just to add, I think the spelling in the article you cite is incorrect. Kelley's book cites the spelling I use as does the "Russell-Nelson Bible" Conneticut Historical Collections by Barber. New Haven 1856; page 145.Cdirkwiki1 00:14, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I thought I would also add a quote from Kelley's book (page 8): "... the most important in the movement to establish the college appear to have been James Pierpont, Thomas Buckingham, and Israel Chauncy, members of the original board, Samuel Russell, who was soon to be elected to that body, and Gurdon Saltonstall, who was never a trustee." I hope this helps clarify things. Actually there is apparently some murkiness about what went on in Branford at Russell's home, prior to the ministers taking steps to establish the college, but Kelley seems to imply that Russell was prominent in contribution to the formation of the college.Cdirkwiki1 01:05, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
