Fair use rationale for Image:258827.1020.A.jpg[edit]

Image:258827.1020.A.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Mary Blake (MacDonald's character) and Marie Blake (her sister)[edit]

I noticed that Jeannette MacDonald's character was named Mary Blake while her real-life sister used the stage name Marie Blake. MacDonald apparently considered her sister the better actor (IMDB) and I wondered if the name of the character was a coincidence or a choice by the popular and apparently fairly hard-negotiating MacDonald as a kind of tribute to her older sister. If the latter, is it worth adding as a note on this film?

Edits to the Plot Summary[edit]

The original film summary contained errors that presented important film scenes in the wrong sequence.

Specifically, Blackie Norton decides to run for supervisor BEFORE Mary leaves him to sing at the Tivoli Opera House. The placement of text in the original summary suggests otherwise. I fixed that by moving the text about Blackie's campaign decision so it appears before the text describing Mary's debut at the Tivoli.

Additionally, in the movie Mary doesn't meet Burley's mother and decide to marry her son until AFTER she returns to the Paradise and realizes that it's in her best interest to leave the club and Blackie (for the second time) with Father Tim, unlike what's reported in the original plot summary. I modified the text so the scene between Mary and Burley's mother appears in the correct order.

Lastly, the plot overview sometimes lacked transition from one scene to the next, making the summary a bit choppy. The placement of certain text conveyed a feeling of disconnectedness that made it unclear how scenes collectively led to larger plot themes. For example, one paragraph began as follows: "Norton knocks out a heckler during a speech in Golden Gate Park. Blackie wants to stop Mary singing at the Tivoli, but when he hears her, he does not stop the opera." I added text that hopefully improves the flow of the summary and provides a more unified overview of the film.

One error that I noticed in the plot description is that it is claimed that Blackie Norton wants to run for San Francisco Board Of Supervisors to protect the other club owners' "crooked interests" - but actually, Blackie's interest in running was to get laws enforced to make unsafe establishments come up to code because as they were, they were unsafe fire traps - it was another clue that Blackie was not as bad a guy as he may have seemed on the surface, and he was going head-to-head against Burly, who was opposed to making safety improvements to his establishments, citing the expense of doing so. In this way, Blackie, who runs a burlesque joint, and is an atheist, is shown to actually be on the moral high ground compared to his foe, Burly, in spite of the fact that Burly is the owner of a respectable opera house. Error in Plot summary[edit]

The plot summary claims that the movie begins with Gable and Tracy boxing, but that scene doesn’t take place until around 15 minutes into the film. Dschwein (talk) 17:29, 29 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
