San Francisco Bay Blackhawks[edit]

The WSL/WSA standings page indicates that the San Jose Earthquakes became the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks after 1988 ("San Jose moved to San Francisco Bay."). It's not completely compelling, because it's a private person's site, but it's all the evidence we have. Though lack of time prevents me from searching for more sources at the moment, there seems to be a pretty comprehensive post here recounting the history of the Clash/Earthquakes team name and explaining how the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks was started from scratch for the 1989 WSA season, which doesn't appear to be any less valid than the previous private person's site. According to an earlier post located here (which apparently led to the corrected timeline in my first link), most of the printed evidence is found in archived San Jose Mercury News articles during 1988-1990, all of which needs a paid account to access. | Bananko 15:15, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, both sources look pretty good. That first source seems to be an overall culmination of many bits of info such as that second source and other sources around. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Quakes Organization: '74 - '88[edit]

Were the San Jose Earthquakes of NASL, MISL, and WSA all one continuous organization? Did the same continuous entity really survive from 1974 to 1988 or were they different organizations that adopted the Earthquakes name as their own? While it changed ownership a few times, it was all one continous organization from 1974 to 1990 (though the team played its last game in 1988). 75.147.233.17 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 21:13, 5 June 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Naming[edit]

I have found a Sports Illustrated article from 1974 stating the origin of the team name which directly contrasts the existing information (which was unsourcedand has been for five-and-a-half years), so decided to be bold and remove this today:

The name Earthquakes came from a newspaper contest in the San Jose Mercury News^{[citation needed]}
