History explaining why San Vicente Blvd. is split in such an odd way[edit]

Has anyone found any sources as to the history or explanation why San Vicente Blvd. is split in such an odd way between LA/Beverly Hills/West Hollywood and LA/Brentwood areas? There has to be a reason. Is it just an odd twist and coincidence of history? was it always this way? Today as the wikipedia page reads, it is a uniquely confusing road in the City. Sources answering these questions would enrich this article and Wikipedia LA knowledge.
