Sand Island is a significant historic area (and kayaking destination) within the boundaries of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Currently (2011) the National Park Service is restoring one of the remaining farmstead/fisheries on the island to illustrate the life of the island community. Interest in the island will be substantial once the restoration is completed, so this entry serves a legitimate purpose.

Most of the text in this article has been directly copied from an NPS-sponsored historic study, People and Places: A Human History of the Apostle Islands, by Jane C. Busch, 2008. This is a well-researched and carefully documented source, and as a U.S. government publication, it is in the public domain.
