English Translation[edit]

The sentence : "The sūtra was likely composed in Sanskrit in India, but currently exists only in Chinese and Tibetan translations" isn't true so it should be removed. There's an english translation that's been around since 2000 which was done by Prof. John P. Keenan, published by BDK Publications. It's titled "The Scripture on the Explication of Underlying Meaning" and can easily be found via a Google search. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.72.224.5 (talk) 00:20, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Textual history[edit]

Also this article needs a section describing the textual history, what translations exist, when it came to Tibet, to China etc.

Cleary's book 'Buddhist Yoga' is a translation of this sutra into (somewhat idiosyncratic) English and the introduction contains material. Zero sharp 06:46, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(The previous material was moved from the Samdhinirmocanasutra page) --Clay Collier 10:36, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dating[edit]

There is no way that the dating is correct. It is a Mahayana sutra. See in this regard [1]. What exactly does Powers say? Mitsube (talk) 05:21, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's pretty clear in the text:

<quote>Probably originally composed sometime around the fourth century B.C.E. in India, the Samdhinirmocana sutra (Discourse Explaining the Thought or Sutra on Unfurling the Real Meaning) is today extant only in Chinese and Tibetan versions (Chinese, Jie shenmi jing; Tibetan, Dgongs pa nges par ’grel pa’i mdo).</quote>

Maybe there was just an error and BCE showed up instead of CE? I'll see if I can find another reference. --Clay Collier (talk) 05:47, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, Warder lumps it in with some other texts as being from the 3rd Century CE without going into its specific dating. The composition date must be from before Asanga's commentary on it in the 4th Century. Warder reports that Lamotte believed that the text originated as a number of individual texts that were then collected together later. I think it's just a typo- this says that the earliest Mahayana text found along the silk road is a copy of the sutra from the 5th century CE; one of the books in Powers' bibilography (page 4) says 1st or 2nd century AD for the earliest date of the precursor texts, and 3rd century for the final form. --Clay Collier (talk) 06:17, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Revised the dating and history to match Warder and Powers' other publication. --Clay Collier (talk) 06:50, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It is quite informative now. Mitsube (talk) 07:09, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
