I would suggest that the high fuel consumption was largely due to the cracked cylinder leaking steam, obliging the driver to open the regulator more to get minimum power. I don't agree either that Hackworth's design was " antiquated", the return tube boiler by the standards of the day was pretty efficient. Stephensons were pretty worried by the competition from this locomotive built on a shoestring at Hackworth's personal expense. Build date 1815[edit]
