Using books as references[edit]

@Srabanta Deb, Deb Pradipta, and Pratyutpannamati: If you want to use books as sources, you need to actually look at the books you use, and say what page the information comes from. For example, if you want to say what school he went to, then you need to give the page number in the book that says what school he went to.

In the citation templates you put into the article, you gave the number of pages in the different books. That was an error, and I have deleted that information. The page number field should tell the reader which page in the book contains the information. It is perfectly OK to cite different pages of a book for different facts. For example, if page 27 says what school he went to and page 42 describes his "miraculous" initiation into something, then provide a citation to page 27 next to the statement about his school and a citation to page 42 for his initiation.

P.S. If you are going to talk about his "miraculous" initiation, it would be helpful if you said (a) what he was being initiated into, and (b) in what way it was "miraculous". People are initiated into lots of things (for example the Royal Marines), so saying he had an initiation does not really tell us anything. And there are many types of miracles, including parting the Red Sea and raising the dead, so please be more specific.-- Toddy1 (talk) 11:13, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion 9 November 2023‎[edit]

I think speedy deletion would be the right thing to do. There was a speedy deletion tag placed on 6 November,[1] but this was turned down by 0xDeadbeef, who said that decline G4; seems to be different enough from the deleted version (there are now book sources) no prejudice against actually evaluating the sources and opening an AfD discussion though.[2] I think that view was mistaken. Though there might be the appearance of book sources, there are no proper page references. The editor who placed these worthless junk references wrote All these references refer to the entire book and not to any page.[3] His refusal to provide page references suggests that he has never seen the books he cited.-- Toddy1 (talk) 17:22, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

User:Toddy1 Speedy is only meant for uncontroversial deletion, if a tag has been declined in good-faith by a user in good-standing then that is inherent evidence that deletion is not uncontroversial, and so the pags should be listed at the appropriate deletion discussion. I was the one who added the tag and I have no issue with 0xDeadbeef's decision to decline it. Both WP:PROD and WP:AFD are available. 2601:5CC:8300:A7F0:B425:7B63:A013:9724 (talk) 19:41, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
