This bio article needs to be tightened up. Also I feel that some the statements are POV and a more formal tone be adopted. What Philippine music charts?

The Philippines doe not have a music chart that is comparable to America's Billboard and Japan's Oricon. How valid are those chart positions in the article? Failure to reply within three days would mean erasure of such. Starczamora (talk) 21:19, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

As of now, Philippines has no music charts that is elaborate as AMA but we have the so called MYX Music Awards where the nominees will win through online votes. There's also awarding ceremony held annually. This award-giving body also include Foreign Artist in their online poll. Pretty7533 (talk) 12:15, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

Assessment comment

I think C Class is appropriate, the article has problems with peacock words, spelling, and sourcing. Something like "thousands of screaming fans" and "versatile enough to conquer every genre" doesn't belong into the article, and these are just examples. Her website, YouTube, Asianfanatics.net, titikpilipino.com, etc. cannot be considered reliable sources. I also think there is a problem with close paraphrasing of a primary source in how her website's bio is adapted. Overall, the page seems to resemble a fanpage as of now. I am commenting here following a new request for reassessment at Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Assessment. The article still appears to be at C-class. The "Early years" section relies entirely on the self-published biography on her website and feels far too gushy for a serious article. The section needs to gain a more clinical/factual tone; for example, "The family business went bankrupt, it was harder to sustain the expenses of her auditions.[4] All at once, there was a sickness in the family, they were being driven out of their house because they could no longer pay the rent, they do not have the tuition money to sustain their education, and making ends meet became impossible." could become "Bankruptcy of the family business and sickness in the family lead to financial problems, making it difficult to afford audition and tuition fees." Voice

This section has been removed due to unreliable source. Although many, music experts in the internet says that this is accurate still, this is not yet confirm.

Geronimo is known for singing different kinds of genre because of her versatility. Critically acclaimed by mimicking the voices of her idols Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Beyonce Knowles, Christina Aguillera, Alicia Keys and Regine Velasquez. To date, Her lowest note so far is Bb2 in her live performance I Believe I Can Fly (which can be shown in her U.S. tour of The Next One) and her highest note she reached so far with the use of high falsetto is C7 (super high falsetto/headtone) with the song of Bohemian Rhapsody and Healing which she sung in ASAP. And her second highest note in live performance is F6 with the song I'll Be There which she sung in her Record Breaker concert at the Araneta Colesium last November 7, 2009. Currently, her vocal range would be 4 octaves and 3 notes.

• "Many music experts say" is a weaselish phrase. Such claims need to be backed up by reliable sources, and YouTube is not such a source. Besides, distilling that information from these YouTube videos constitutes original research, and that's not OK. This deleted section is so funny. definitely false and overrated. Does the contributor even know how high C7 is? Sarah struggles in E5 whether belt, mix, or falsetto/headtone, how can she possibly handle a note more than an octave higher? lol And talk about outright stupidity, an A7 in Forever's not..? That's 3 notes higher than M. Carey's highest whistle note in Emotions. Indigent means "One who is poor and cannot afford basic neccessities of life like food, shelter and clothes".

I guess I didn't define what I meant good enough. What I need about define is that assume that I, the humble reader, knows very little about what you're talking about. Perhaps instead of saying "define," I should've said "explain". If I wanted a definition, I'd crack open a dictionary. How was Sarah and her family "indigent"?

Childhood and early beginnings

• She grew up in a rented house in Santa Cruz... Again, explain what you mean by "a rented house". I'd guess that it has to do with her family's economic status, but the context neither confirms or disproves that assumption. That's why you need to tell me. Is it possible that there's some significance to the phrase in Filipino society? I honestly don't know, since I'm an ugly American who knows very little about Geronimo's culture, so you need to explain these cultural differences to me.

• Geronimo had two sister: Jonnah Rizzie, Sunshine Grace, and a brother: Ezekiel Gabriel. I've never seen a stated policy about it, but I'm pretty sure that stating the names of siblings and children is frowned upon in WP, unless they're notable themselves. There are privacy reasons for that, and stating these names isn't necessary. I'm not even sure it's necessary to state them, unless it has some bearing on content later on, or if it's important. For example, in one of my pet articles, Anthony Field, it states that Field is the youngest sibling of seven children. That's included, without listing them all out, because Field's large family has been important throughout his career, and his BLP demonstrates that. For this article, though, I'd delete it.

• Why is Geronimo singing Pasko Na Naman important? Is the song important in Filipino culture? If so, tell me and leave it as a redlink to encourage a new article. If not, it's trivia, and doesn't need to be there.

One of the best benefits of editing for WP, I've found, is that your English writing skills greatly improve with all the mentorship that goes on here. It takes practice to get one of your pet articles successfully through FAC, along with a lot of help from other editors.

• Make sure that you read the "Quotation marks" section in WP:PUNC, in the WP:MOS. There are errors in the use of quotes throughout.

• Watch your formatting. The fourth paragraph in this section has some incorrect italics that should be fixed.

• It is a regional semi-finalist for the 2008 International Emmy Awards under the Television Program category. I see that this Emmy award is awarded differently than in the US. You need to explain that some.

• It doesn't much matter the format you use in citing your sources (my fav is WP:CT), but yours is not. I suggest reading WP:CS to familiarize yourself with how to cite your sources.

• Please read WP:SPS, the policy about self-published sources. Using a BLP's webpage isn't always inappropriate, but I recommend doing your best to avoid it. If you can find the same information in a more reliable source, use it instead of the webpage. Some people state that if you can't, you should remove the information. I don't, but I suspect that if you were to take this article to GA and definitely to FA, you may get pinged on it.

• I haven't checked it out at this glance, but are there some non-English sources here? If so, you'll have to get another expert's opinion about the accuracy of the translations and their reliability.

Thanks for the opportunity to review this article; I learned a lot about an interesting individual I had never heard of. I think that it has the potential to go far, if its editors are committed to doing what it takes to improve it. I think that once the content and grammar issues are addressed, this article will be much improved. I'll try and do a copyedit in the coming days.

I fixed the sources now :) ummm it achieved platinum when it sold 30,000 copies therefore, it is now 3x platinum because today, it already sold 90,000 copies. I'm including my version of this sentence because it demonstrates a couple of things. My version is more succinct. I would've used the "one huge oven" line, which I suspect is from the source, but I wasn't able to access it because the site required a subscription. Now, I don't believe that every source has to be accessible, since depending upon the topic, it's not always possible if you want to do justice to the subject. However, for this article, for this girl, I think that most of the sources need to be accessible to the reader. If you want to use this source, fine--just don't bother with the URL. That being said, if you want to use the oven reference (it's so great), go ahead, but say something like: According to Jojo Panaligan of the Manila Bulletin, Geronimo's audience stayed for the entire concert "despite the fact that The Dome became one huge oven" when the air conditioning broke. Well.. I think we should use the OVEN thing.. since the Araneta Coliseum is really like a BIG OVEN when the air condition failed to function. Even in source #14 (in her biography site), one of the sentence there says "Her first concert at the Araneta Coliseum, entitled "The Other Side of Sarah Geronimo" (2005), was a sold out concert. Sarah's supporters stayed until the end of the concert despite the fact that The Dome became one huge oven when the air conditioning units failed to function". When I'm done with this ce, I'm going to do a source review, but since I have the source in front of me, I went ahead and changed it. I think you did the right thing to change some lines. Manila bulletin is a VERY GOOD sources since it is a Good News paper without bias and such. But I think the writer translate De Walden's words (of course english words) into the news paper in different form. Source review? I think we should do it. • After a couple of days break due to RL busyness, I'm back. Gonna try and finish the ce tonight. I just cut this: Singer Billy Crawford was one of the guest that night said that: “You know Sarah, I'm one of your million fans. I've told you this, you're awesome, you're amazing.. You are so blessed that's why I've told you, Sarah, You're The One”. Backstreet Boy member Howie Dorough also took time to help her for this concert when he pre-taped the song "I'll Be There" and Sarah sang it along with him during one segment of the show. The reason I cut it is that I'm not sure that it's important content. Also, the source this info is from may be not be the most reliable. The article reads like a fan review of Sarah's concert, like it was from a blog. I think that the piano accompaniment is important, so I didn't cut it. Yah, one of the best things about this project is that there are no deadlines. For me, though, perhaps more would get done, since I seem to do better with 'em, since without deadlines I just keep procrastinating. So I impose self-imposed deadlines. ;)

• Ok, so now I'm working on the lead. I cut this line: The album became Geronimo's most successful album when it achieved Septuple (7x) platinum. You may have noticed that I cut out any reference to the gradations of album rating throughout the article, because to me as an ignorant reader (i.e., one who knows nothing about the music industry), an album making Septuple or 12x platinum means nothing to me. I think all we need to say is that her albums sold this many units and became platinum. Ok, so here are the promised assignments, that when completed, I feel will greatly benefit this article. They go beyond the copyedit I just completed. I think that they need to occur before this article is peer reviewed, and then submitted for GAC.

• One of this article's current weaknesses is its sources. The first thing I want you to do is to make sure that the sources' format is consistent throughout. The format you use doesn't matter, but it has to be consistent. Pick one and go with it, but make sure they're accurate and has enough information. My favorite resource is WP:CT. I want you to make sure that each and every source follows the same exact format.

I've started working the sources' format and I notice that the section "Childhood and early beginnings" has a 2 sources that repeats around 3-5 times, and these sources are source #8 and #10. It's perfectly acceptable to use the same source multiple times; that's what the "ref name=" tag is for. I noticed something for the first time, though--up until ref #25, the footnote convention is followed, but after that, the inline citation format is used. Perhaps you were converting it from one convention to the other. If so, please complete it. If not, you need to decide which format you're using, and make it consistent throughout. (I have a personal preference for the footnote system, but it's just a matter of taste and aesthetics; again, it doesn't matter what convention you use, but it must be consistent.)--Christine (talk) 05:24, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

• There's an issue with the reliability of your sources. For example, as I've mentioned before, the subject's webpage isn't always the most reliable. If you can find a better source for the information, you should use it before a personal webpage. I suggest that for every bit of info you support with Sarah's site, you should do a google search and see if you can back it up with another more reliable source. For example: She was the third of four children, and had two sisters and one brother. I assume that the entire short paragraph this sentence is in is supported by Sarah's site. I'd bet that this is relatively easy to substantiate. Do a google search for "Sarah Geronimo family". Then do that for every source that's suspect.

Good question. Wikipedia:Citing IMDb puts the reliability of IMdB into question. Understand, though, that it isn't policy. However, it looks like the website you mention is of "wiki-style", which is #4 in the "Inappropriate uses" section. Personally, I try to avoid IMDb, but there are times when it's appropriate. Hmm.. I'm wondering, how will I know if the image is free of use? Because I only upload 3 images of her which is my own shots. I ask someone (since he/she contribute 2 amazing image in the article) if he/she can add more images and he/she said ok. I recommend that you read WP:IUP. I have to admit that I am the wrong person to ask about if an image satisfies the free-use criteria. I've had some outstanding editors who are experts in the use of images on WP try and personally tutor me about it, and I have yet to comprehend it all. My brain is too puny for it, as Winnie the Pooh would say. At the same time, I think that if you took the pics yourself, they should be fine. I haven't looked at how you tagged those images, though. I recommend that you upload them to Commons. I also recommend that you get another smarter editor to review your images, like User:Awadewit. The Philippines was under the Spanish rule for 333 years, until it was ceded by Spain to USA after the Spanish American War. Geronimo is a Spanish Surname. Citation needed?

It is a fact in the music industry here in the Philippines that she is the only Filipino artist to have a platinum selling dvd's of her concert. You can visit all the major record stores here and ask for it. ABS-CBN claim

I'm not sure the claim Premium "VVIP" tickets for Geronimo's March 2021 stage show 'Tala: The Film Concert' sold out in three days after going on sale sourced to ABS-CBN should be in the article. ABS-CBN is a media network but this appears to be a press release or promotional content. ABS-CBN owns KTX, the "online ticketing and streaming platform" where the tickets were sold and the film will be shown, along with iWantTFC, another platform to view the film. The "article" really only serves to promote ABS-CBN's own services, especially with statements like Regular tickets...are still available for purchase. Thoughts? I don't see how it's controversial to mention the subject's major tour in the article. I've removed the promotional flavors from the included text. As far as the source itself having some COI, you could probably make the same argument about a lot of media companies, but I don't think that automatically disqualifies them as a reliable source, especially in the context of simply confirming that a tour was held. Popstar Royalty nickname

Whether it should be capitalized or not depends upon whether it's considered a generic description (e.g., Meghan Markle is a "member of the royal family") vs. a specific appellation (e.g., Markle is the Duchess of Sussex). Calling someone "popstar royalty" isn't normally a title; however, the sources seem to capitalize it as if that phrase can refer only to Geronimo, which is weird, but sourced.

The bigger issue is the repeated reinsertion of the link to Honorific nicknames in popular music; that link shouldn't be used if Geronimo isn't part of the linked article. Using a link in that way is intended to explain or provide more information about something raised in the article (in this case, how Geronimo is part of a group of people with royal nicknames); instead, it leads to an article that doesn't even mention Geronimo. If/when Geronimo is added to the target article (and there is consensus that she belongs there), it would be okay to add that link. Grandpallama (talk) 16:33, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
