I suggest to remove references[edit]

I suggest to remove references 1,3,4,5 as they don't meet the standards required by wikipedia (blogs or forums rather than reviewed sources) Wikipheg (talk) 01:27, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest to remove all wikilinks in the software section that lead to not existing pages. If the pages do not exist the mentioned programms are probably not noteworthy enough for a separate wiki entry. If they are and the pages are just not there due to a lack of time, please provide a reliable source next to the link so that somebody else can pick up the job and create the respective page. Link removal[edit]

I have removed the links to software that are redlinked or only link back to the manufacturer's websites. They are being put back saying that I am removing others software to promote my own. I have no GPS software other than the software that is in the GPS devices that I own and use. I am not associated in any way with any company that makes GPS devices of software. I am only removing the software because Wikipedia is not a directory of all software. I believe, but am not certain, that this dispute goes back to one software package that I nominated for deletion and the consensus was that it did not meet our notability guidelines, Master Navigator. I have gone back through and reviewed all the links again. I individually removed those that linked to the manufacturer's website because wikipedia is not a software directory. I also removed some that were redlinks without any sources at all, these are not verifiable so they do not belong in the article. I removed one entry that was linked to a blog which is not a reliable source. If anyone objects they should explain why each one belongs in the article before or as they are putting them back. All the rest of the links have articles or in one case, Street Atlas USA and Topo USA, the company that produces them, DeLorme, has an article and both of them are mentioned in the article. Ok, Now the editor who keeps reinserting has given a reason for reinserting the text I have removed. The reason given in an edit summary is that the material is valuable to users and they would not be find what they are looking for without those links. StreetDeck, FoxtrotGPS and TangoGPS are some of the links they keep readding to the article. There are no sources of any kind that go with these redlinks. I do not understand how these are helpful to anyone in finding anything. The other are links to manufacturers' websites. I can understand how the manufacturers would want the the sites listed in a Wikipedia article. Wikipedia is a great advertising platform if we allow it. For these to be included we would need links to reliable sources to show someone other than the manufacturer has noticed these software packages. GB fan is a vandal who deletes people's doings to promote his own views and opinions and software who pays him money! What he does has nothing to do with the ideas of Wikipedia! I really hope he looses his rights to mess here any more! Nalit (talk) 00:44, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, please no personal attacks. Second, no one pays me any money to do any editing on wikipedia and I do not have any financial interest in any GPS software. I have stated above why I do not believe the entries I have removed do not belong. The proper way to discuss this is to explain why the links you want in the article belong. If you want to you can ask for a third opinion but as I said you should explain why you feel they belong. There are also other options for dispute resolution. Programs[edit]

Perhaps stupid, but shouldn't we mention the "programs" or "daemons" that comprises the GPS navigation software ? For example, it can include:

GPS location + showing on a map (map can be a basic global map or a detailed one with all roads, ...); this "location" feature performs the same function as the sextant; showing of actual coordinates (ie x.xx°N, x.xx°E) along with the map is a plus
GPS compass: on maps; often provided by means of an arrow (rather than say a point simply indicating your position on the map)
GPS waypoints ability: ability to introduce actual destinations, rather than just showing your current location on a map (with or without compass feature)
possible following of streets (when proceeding to an activated destination, rotating of camera and 3D views
other things (points of intrest, ...)

In my view only the first thing is really necessairy, and the 3rd is also useful; the GPS compass thing may not be very accurate ? (depends on hardware, available GPS sats), and may be best done using an actual magnetic compass~(reliable, and still allows a fall-back device if computer breaks down or runs out of power).
