Can anybody get a picture of this guy? -- Jared A. Hunt 14:08, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

I've got one. — Anonymous user 19:16, 3 November 2006

Bulbapedia.com have a photo of him so you could check it out for posible use . By the way the url is for the site itself not the page the photo is in . Richardson j

Actually he has had an recent interview with game center CX about 5 years ago , I found it some website called gamemuseum. [1]17 Jul 2009

Wealth

It'd be good to flesh out the Lifestyle-ish section with a mention of how much he's earned; did he get millions off of Pokemon, or no? What has he done with it? etc. --Gwern (contribs) 20:38 5 December 2006 (GMT)

I think we need more sources than a single times article on this man, since so many sites rely on this one source. Aren't there any OTHER interviews?

  • bumps* I agree with the previous unsigned comment. What has this guy been up to since RBY? Is the guy such a recluse that he hasn't made a single new interview in 10 years? --71.107.217.63 17:59, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

New source coming

A new book, aimed at children, is being published about Tajiri - [2]. -ΖαππερΝαππερ BabelAlexandria 15:57, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Factual Inacuraccy

in this article, it is stated that the Nintendo gameboy appeared in 1991. This is not true. The game boy was made first available on April 21, 1989 in japan and sometime in august 1989 in America. NP Chilla (talk) 18:00, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

  • Yuusuke Santamaria is a comedian and there's no evidence in any Japanese sources that he had anything to do with pokemon, especially since he's like 6 years younger than Tajiri and would have still been in school in 82. The only sources I can find for this are all pages that just parrot wiki's database. Question

Just curious but, can Tajiri speak fluent english? --76.103.162.49 (talk) 17:03, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

I am not sure; there is no reliable source that discusses it specifically, but there were some interviews that he did where a translator helped the two parties communicate. かんぱい! Scapler (talk) 19:49, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Removing the Aspergers Reference

The source referenced is designed to teach people who deal with special education children in a manner that doesn't compromise there integrity.(self esteem, assertiveness, intelligence) The book itself makes no reference to how it came to learn Satoshi Tajiri has Aspergers Syndrome. I hope someone can find a a suitable reference and re-add the reference.( The Pokemon Creators book from the Innovators series has no confirmation on Satoshi's involvement.)Ikorack (talk) 20:26, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Your reasoning has nothing to do with the reliability of the sources or whether we can include the information stated. かんぱい! Scapler (talk) 00:11, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

Aspergers

Coatsyuk (talk · contribs) has put into the article that they received an email from GameFreak press officer Yuri Sakurai which states that Tajiri does not have Aspergers. They are using their own personal site as a reference, which I think would qualify as conflict of interest. I have told them that their own personal site is not a reliable source, and even if they took a screenshot of the said email, it still probably wouldn't be considered a good source. Thoughts? Blake (Talk·Edits) 17:44, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

While a quick Google search does confirm that Yuri Sakurai is indeed an Information Coordinator for Game Freak, I must say that it seems odd that they would have a PR guy who doesn't use good English be the one who would handle English language site. Also, I have not found any corrections by any news outlets or books that may have been contacted by Game Freak, and so I am wary of an unreliable source claiming something counter to reliable ones. かんぱい! Asperger's... again!

I removed the mentions of Asperger's in Tajiri's article. Though at least one of the articles cited was from a credible source, there were problems.

  1. The articles don't actually deal with Tajiri specifically. One is about Burt Bacharach's daughter. Appended at the end of the main article is a brief list of "famous sufferers" of Asperger's, among which is listed Tajiri. But it just says it without actually itself citing its own sources. Same for the other article. Yes, this is a major, respected media outlet. Yes, the other article is written by professors and what not. But this is still very flimsy evidence at best. Journalists and professors are not somehow immune to simply believing and disseminating what they read without examining it first. Thus, I am very hesitant to include it in an article that is meant to be a serious source for inquiring readers. By the way, this wouldn't be the first time the media seizes upon unconfirmed hearsay as truth.
  2. Nowhere is there a direct quote from Satoshi Tajiri admitting having the syndrome.
  3. Japanese Wikipedia, which is often a very credible and thoroughly researched source for video game history, makes no mention of his having Asperger's.
  4. I can find no mention of him having Asperger's from Japanese news sources.

If anybody can provide a truly credible source that confirms this diagnosis beyond doubt, please include it here. Otherwise, referring to Tajiri as an Asperger's sufferer is misleading at best, slanderous at worst. 108.93.178.27 (talk) 23:17, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

I recently contacted the author of his biography inquiring about the sources cited. The claim that he has Aspergers came from a MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/550665304 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.74.209.245 (talk) 12:05, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
As did I back in September. According to the e-mail, which I would be glad to post here, said she had no contact with Tajiri, Nintendo, or anyone affiliated with them. Her research, as such, consisted of looking up for things online. The web-page citing Tajiri's supposed affliction came from this MySpace page back in 2008, I think. She explained, however, that at the time she was not able to cite this source in her book as her publisher was wary of directing children to MySpace. She noted that since then, the page has omitted any mention of Tajiri having Asperger's.
Either way, citing her book as a credible source is no longer any good. But it's funny to see people get so worked over this spurious allegation—and see it perpetuated by some of the mainstream press. So much for fact-checking. CurryTime7-24 (talk) 01:07, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Mysterious inspiration

Tajiri claims that Western audiences understand his work better; instead of focusing exclusively on prominent characters like Pikachu, he believes they understand that the games are about partnership and identification with one's team.[1]

How did this information influence development? I see it for simple lip service. 221.185.252.208 (talk) 03:25, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

Asperger's syndrome

Can someone tell me where the information about Tajiri having Asperger's syndrome came from? If not, then there's no reason to treat it as anything more than hearsay. I'm not ruling out the possibility - I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case - but someone on the Internet associating Tajiri's behavior with Asperger's does not a professional diagnosis make. --The Trashman 15:57, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Nowadays, anyone who is the least bit shy, least bit creative, or has any personality quirks of any sort (in other words, EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON THE PLANET) is described as an aspie. I think it should be removed from the article, along with every other mention of "soandso has aspergers!" on Wikipedia.--Stevekl 04:06, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
But we've already got three sources backing-up the fact he possesses the condition. (oh, by the way, Stevek, I have Asperger's myself, and I find it rather encouraging upon learning that famous people have the condition - it's encouraging and good for the self-esteem.) - NP Chilla 18:29, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, because the main point of Wikipedia is to boost people's self esteem... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 137.205.74.147 (talkcontribs)

Nobody said that was the purpose of Wikipedia, if you've not nothing to contribute to this discussion, please leave.
That aside, let's keep this article as it is - it's impartial enough for an encyclopedia. :) NP Chilla (talk) 18:00, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
I agree that declaring he has Asperger's Syndrome is irrelevant. For starters, none of the references provided seem very credible and all I've heard so far is heresay and speculation simply because some of his behaviors can apply to a person with Asperger's (but then again, they can apply to a lot of people). It would be like a celeb suddenly wasting away for whatever reason and Wikipedia declaring that he/she has AIDS. Secondly, it is frankly none of anyone's business or concern unless he decides to publicly share whatever inflictions he has. The point of Wikipedia isn't to be a repository for all the inflictions notable people suffer from so everyone with the same infliction can get some bizarre satisfaction knowing they share a condition with someone noteworthy. Furthermore, might I ask why someone felt the need to post the same line concerning his alleged Asperger's twice in this article? It's absolutely redundant and the second line (in the early life section) feels completely out of place and random. Now had it mentioned that he had been diagnosed with it in his early life, it would read better and make more sense being there. However, as it is, it's completely out of place and should be removed. In fact, I'm going to be bold and remove it myself and move the second reference added to support that statement to the first mention of his Asperger's, with the hope that perhaps everyone else will see the sense to remove that line as well. 72.152.159.72 (talk) 06:19, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
As a side note, I also noticed that someone else has done essentially what I just did and had it reverted as vandalism. I wish to make you guys aware that what I am doing is not vandalism, and instead am trying to make it more presentable. There is no need to have the same statement repeated throughout the article, it looks bad and as I stated earlier was very out of place and just looked and read very awkwardly. I have preserved the additional reference that was added to the second line. If someone feels the need to revert this and re-add that awkward line back in, I would suggest you consult with someone skilled in copyediting or an English major or something and they'll likely tell you the same thing I'm saying. 72.152.159.72 (talk) 06:34, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Why should a significant fact about a person be omitted by an encyclopedia just because you don't think it's important? There are endless references to celebrities' ancestries, family relations, or sexual orientations, for example. If it's important to know about the Irish heritage of so-and-so's materal grandfather, I don't see why it's any less important to mention that a celebrity has a certain disorder. The fact that you wrote a such a long rant about it suggests that you have a vested interest against it, which would be violating NPOV. By claiming it is "none of anyone's business," you're suggesting that a disorder, which someone is born with beyond their choosing, is something to be ashamed of, which definitely violates NPOV. --74.103.150.125 (talk) 21:07, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Yeah basically if you take a browse on the pages to the people he's talked to you'll find stuff he wrote to other people, but you'll have to look through pages and pages of comments just to find his .. I'll be back looking for more websites with evidence about him, if I find any I'll be sure to post on this. 9th August 2009 22:26/10:26 PM —Preceding unsigned comment added by バンギラス (talkcontribs) 14:28, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

As to having the statement in the article twice, this is required per WP:LEAD; if it is in the lead, then it MUST be in a section of the article. So, if it should not be presented twice, then it should be in the body and not in the lead. Therefore, I will remove it from the lead, since it seems to have caused controversy, and put it into the "life" section. It may seem more awkward, but it is also required per our manual of style that the lead not contain information not stated elsewhere in the article. かんぱい! Scapler (talk) 06:57, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

In regards to Tsunekazu Ishihara

I wasn't aware that the image I placed in the article was not, in fact, of Tajiri, but was instead of Tsunekazu Ishihara. A search on Google Images brings up photos of Ishihara when searching "satoshi tajiri", and the Wikimedia Commons image file in question is misleadingly titled "File:Satoshi-tajiri.jpg". I apologise for the mistake. I've made a request on Commons that the file's name be changed to avoid any further incidents like this. Hopefully a non-copyrighted image of Tajiri can be used on this article sometime in the future. –Matthew - (talk) 01:15, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

Categorization edits must be based on relevant references, citations and source links to reliable sources. As much as some WP editors would like to categorize the article within WP "Category:People with Asperger syndrome" (including myself, if it can be proved), there remains absolutely no reference, citation or source link within the article to justify the edit. A video reiterating the claim that the subject was "diagnosed with Asperger syndrome" simply doesn't prove the point because the video wasn't published by a reliable source, like a professional newspaper or magazine, or the subject himself. I have undone the edit in question.24.11.116.253 (talk) 13:01, 19 January 2017 (UTC)

Please Clean Up This Article

This article is horrendously written. Here I came to read up on the guy, and it turns out the article contradicts itself. Let me quote some sections.

In the About section : "In the year 1991, when the Game Boy appeared, Tajiri imagined a game, based on the insects he used to collect as a child. The idea of catching and collecting monsters was new. He was inspired when he saw two kids playing the Game Boy next to each other. He came to Shigeru Miyamoto and together they developed the link cable technology"

Here's a bit from the Game Freak section : "In 1991, Satoshi discovered the Game Boy. When he first saw Link Cables, he imagined insects creeping along them, and the Pokémon idea was born."

That's just ONE inconsistency. The creation of Game Freak, his unquoted video game magazines, or his relationship to Nintendo is not only inconsistent, but they're all without references...

In other words, someone painted up a nice, pretty story, and this article seems like nothing more than happy rumors. Especially the Asperger's Syndrome thing. Linking to underestablished video gaming websites doesn't necessarily make a rumor true. If I could see an interview with the man, I and a whole lot of other people would be more willing to believe it. More than that, why does this appear under his work at Nintendo..... isn't that more of a "Personal" thing?

Beyond that, where in the hell are ANY sources for anything else mentioned?! Please clean this article up. I've seen better written (more consistent) articles on EncyclopediaDramatica. I mean, if you're going to make claims on something, be able to back up those claims with better sources than UnknownGameWebsite.com —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.48.40.133 (talk) 23:59, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

I fully agree. This is horribly written ,adn hopefully I'll get around to doing some re-writing soon. But for now, I removed the Aspergers speculation because it is just that, speculation. Notthegoatseguy (talk) 03:02, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

I agree with Notthegoatseguy. Tajiri has not the Aspergers, and I will remove this article too. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Yuri Sakurai (talkcontribs) 02:00, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

About the Aspergers part...I just read a novel about autism (title was Embracing the Wide Sky, author Daniel Tammet) (sorry but I don't know how to cite) which states he does have Aspergers syndrome, while the List of people on the autism spectrum includes his name (that's how found this article, actually). If he is not autistic, someone should either remove him from the list or find a reliable source (which according to the discussion page history has been found, in a section deleted by Yuri). SouthH (talk) 06:30, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

I found and added a book source that says Tajiri confirmed he was autistic, but didn't want to discuss it further, so I removed the "don't say he's autistic" warning and confirmed it. Hope that's okay. Keep in mind, it said "autistic" and not "Aspergers."Mrmoustache14 (talk) 17:40, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
