Largest?[edit]

"The Savo dialect of Finnish is the largest dialect of the Finnish language." Does this mean it is larger than standard Finnish? --Krsont 20:23, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not as far as I know. Everyone in Finland can read and write standard Finnish almost perfectly. But the spoken language is an altogether different matter. The spoken language in the Uusimaa, Eastern Uusimaa, Tavastia Proper and Päijänne Tavastia regions is very close to the normal spoken Finnish, which is different from standard Finnish (what Finns call kirjakieli, "book language"). If you go further west, east, or north, the spoken language becomes much more different. Most Finns in the four regions I mentioned aren't even aware they're speaking in a dialect, they think they speak in normal spoken Finnish. JIP | Talk 19:53, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think the dual-verb construction "seistä toljotat" ("you stand there gawking") is in any way unique to Savo Finnish. I have used it myself lots of times and I don't speak Savo Finnish. JIP | Talk 19:53, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think there is some misinformation on this page. For one thing, transforming can't be done using regexps, even the example is incorrect. The last section of the example table is also wrong. All other articles on matters of Savonian interest use 'Savonia' - should they be changed as well? I can detect a certain grade of affection towards the Finnish name 'Savo', but the fact remains 'Savonia' is a lot more workable since every proficient English speaker will instantly figure out the correct pronunciation, based on names like Livonia and Snowdonia. As for käärä and käörä, i dont think ive ever heard anyone using those two (well propably have but cannot recall whatsoever). kiärä (for example, kiärällaene - käyränlainen), however, seems to be very common. - "Tuavitsaene". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.251.240.113 (talk) 14:53, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Epenthetic vowels[edit]

Not all cases of coda /l h n/ are affected. Penesatanakki sounds just absurd, and tuhuka or silita aren't much better. So what's the best way to phrase what clusters are affected and what aren't? "Two continuants" doesn't work for eg. /ns/, "non-homorganic" doesn't work for eg. /ht/, and "two sonorants" doesn't work for eg. /ll/.

I think we have /lp lm lv lk lh nh/ to cover. Maybe /nv/, I'm not so sure about that.

Also, our sorce mentions /ls lj/ and /h/-clusters (voiced only: /hm hv hn hl hr hd hj/) only being broken in Ostrobothnia.

As you an see these are not regular cases and there are no rules one to one how a standard Finnish word could be translated to Savonian dialect. There only can be mentioned the most typical features but those are not rules. In Southern Savonia there are even more "irregularities". --SM (talk) 01:10, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Juankoski[edit]

We Juankoski residents don't speak a northern savonian dialect? As someone who was born in Muuruvesi and has been a resident of the municipality of Juankoski all his life, I beg to differ.
