Samuel Johnson not a Scotophobe[edit]
Samuel Johnson is routinely dismissed as a Scotophobe, but this should be taken with a grain of salt. He surrounded himself with Scotsmen such as Boswell, and five of his six aids in compiling his dictionary were Northerners or Scotsmen. In his dictionary he liberally points out Scots terminolgy. It seems that he enjoyed to play a Scotophobe, but it seems a playful, respectful hatred.

- I don't think it should be taken with a pinch of salt. He routinely made such comments, and liked Scots, as long as they agreed with him, or worked for him. He took an almost colonial attitude to them.--MacRusgail (talk) 17:56, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
Porridge Wog[edit]
'Porridge Wog' should not be included in this article for two main reasons (A) it is an article about Sawney - 'Porridge Wog' does not really have any relevance to this - I'm sure we could all think of 50 more popular racial slurs for Scots - should they all be included? (B) Porridge Wog is not even a widely used term - I've never heard it before, and the citation provided for it is a comedy website that is hardly reputable. If 'Porridge Wog' should be mentioned anywhere it is in Wiktionary, not here. If you can find a single reputable reference for the use of 'Porridge Wog' (and I don't mean Bebo) then by all means include it here - otherwise, it's just transient nonsense. 91.106.226.28 (talk) 22:11, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
Michael Johnson[edit]
Article currently contains an uncited claim that Johnson's father was Scottish - cannot verify this anywhere. The best I can find is that he was born in Derbyshire [1]. "A particularly racist example"[edit]
I think we should be wary of casual use of the terms 'racist' in this context.
The same goes for a word like 'Scotophobe,' which is as meaningless as other terms currently deploying the suffix '-phobe.' I suggest that terms such as 'prejudice' and 'hostile' are more appropriate and accurate.
