First of AllUpcoming Doja Cat album

So I see the singer, Doja Cat has been changing the title for her fourth studio album. I request a move from First of All to Untitled Doja Cat album, in the meantime until the title is officially released. — JuanGLP (talk + contribs) 02:50, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • I agree that the article name should be moved to the untitled name. She's been changing the title very frequently, so having the article as that until an actual title is revealed is a safe move. DiaMali (talk) 03:27, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • @JuanGLP: I think we should wait for media publications to catch on the silliness. It'd be great to move this to a placeholder name until she makes up her mind on a new name/stops trolling (personally my thoughts are she's doing the latter), but Wikipedia relies on secondary sources, and so far none of them have reported on the situation. So yeah. We should keep things on hold. ‍ ‍ Elias 🌊 ‍ 💬 "Will you call me?"

  • Support I just saw on Twitter that she hasn't decided on the name of the album yet. I think it's all a joke. ?Silencedoc¿ 13:44, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is Harper's Bazaar really a good source for the title?[edit]

hi! i'm a bit confused by how quickly "scarlet" was accepted as the title. the linked haper's bazaar article mentions it in passing, but it's not doja cat's own words, it's just the author writing. doja cat hasn't yet confirmed this title, so how can we be sure it's correct? "Attention" and "Demons" as promotional singles[edit]

"Attention" and "Demons" should be considered promotional singles and not official singles.

  • RCA Records makes a clear distinction between "Paint the Town Red" as an "official single" and never refers to the other two as such, only calling them tracks. The press release for "Paint the Town Red" states that it is the "first official single" and that Doja Cat "releases her new single and music video, 'Paint the Town Red'", repeatedly confirming the song's status as a single. Meanwhile, in the same article, it states, "Previously, Doja Cat dropped her track and video, 'Attention'", avoiding using the terminology of an official single.[1] Likewise, the press release for "Attention" never uses the word single and only refers to it as a track: "Doja Cat releases her new track and music video 'Attention'".[2] The press release for "Demons" also calls it a "track" while in the same article again calling "Paint the Town Red" an "official single", making a clear distinction.[3]
  • On Instagram Live, Doja Cat made it clear that "Attention" was not meant to be a single replayed on the radio, stating it is "not really a song, [but] more of, like, a piece — it's a message" which is "not really supposed to be replayed", but rather something that "would be a nice way to start off the whole rollout".[4]
  • Only "Paint the Town Red" was sent to radio airplay, while "Attention" and "Demons" were not. As established in the case of Taylor Swift's "All Too Well (Taylor's Version)" and Doja Cat's own song "Need to Know", even if a song is released with a music video and is called a single by third-party news outlets, it can only be considered a promotional single if it is not sent to radio by the label.

Agree: Flabshoe1, although your first two points are extremely valid, there are often times that official singles can't be sent to radio simply because the song is not radio-friendly (because of obscurity/unconventional sound, which I guess could be said for both "Attention" and "Demons"?). Otherwise, to help your case, I'd also like to point out that third-party publications like Billboard and Rolling Stone for some reason rarely ever refer to new promo singles as "promotional singles" and will often assume that they're the first/second/third/etc single based on prior releases. Maybe its because they prefer to do their own research or maybe they're just too lazy to read the press releases where the labels call it "promotional"-- not sure lol. @Cybertrip: I think more attention needs to be given to this quotation from her official website: "Doja Cat is back with her latest single...", as well as the "...since she announced her first ... tour" line that is counter to @Flabshoe1's first point—both of which Heartfox already pointed out below. Of course it's also someone from the label who must have written the first, so combine that with the press releases that Flabshoe1 has brought to light and we got conflict on our hands. I think we should make up our mind on which official sources we have to stick with. ‍ ‍ Elias 🌊 ‍ 💬 "Will you call me?"

Another thing to consider is that third party sources refer to “Attention”[5] and “Demons” as promotional singles.[6]
To recap:
  • “Demons” is undoubtedly a promotional single. The official RCA Records press release refers to it as a “track” rather than an official single, and Billboard refers to it as a promotional single.
  • The overwhelming evidence (all but one source) refers to “Attention” as a promotional single. The official RCA Records press release calls it a “track” rather than an official single. Doja Cat has stated that it’s more of a message than a song and not meant to be replayed, and liked a Tweet saying it’s not a single. Third-party source Insider calls it a promotional single. The only evidence to the contrary is the artist’s web store, which calls the song "her latest single". Given all the other evidence, “Attention” should be considered a promotional single.

There needs to be a standard throughout an artist's discography. Many early "singles" at Doja Cat discography were not sent to radio. "Attention" received a physical release (and unlike "Freak", was not a limited edition). How can something with a commercial CD not be a single, yet others which were digital-only are? There is clearly a higher level of promotion with a physical release in 2023. I will give you "Demons", but just because "Attention" didn't have the same chart success as "Paint the Town Red" doesn't mean it should be reclassified as a promo single. "Attention" received a physical release, "Demons" and "Balut" did not. Insider is not a music publication; I would never rely on their classification of songs as singles. Today, Billboard called all three songs "singles". Also, AllAccess is no longer reporting radio add dates, so evidence of radio release will now be extremely limited. Heartfox (talk) 01:48, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Support. An example I have for RCA is their press releases for Walk the Moon's What If Nothing. "One Foot" was the only one labeled as a single in its press release, while the other promotional singles were referred to as songs or tracks in their press releases, mentioning that "One Foot" is the current/latest single. "Kamikaze" was later sent to alternative radio as the second single, and the band's official playlist of their singles up to 2019 only included "One Foot" and "Kamikaze". Comment. "Attention" had a CD single release and Doja Cat's website calls it "her latest single". The RCA press release says "Paint the Town Red" is "the first official single from Doja Cat since she announced her first North American headline tour" (italics added) – that announcement was on June 23 while "Attention" was released on June 16. "Attention" is a single; it received a commercial CD release which a promotional single would never receive. Heartfox (talk) 16:27, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the correction. However, the RCA press release that you mention, while it does say "Paint the Town Red" is the "first official single from Doja Cat since she announced her first North American headline tour", never refers to "Attention" as a single on the same article, instead calling it a "track".
Secondly, having a physical release does not indicate whether a song is a single or not. Doja's promotional single "Freak" had a vinyl release. "Love Spent" by Madonna was released as a promotional CD single. Flabshoe1 (talk) 23:59, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Album cover art[edit]

Has Doja confirmed that the "two pearlescent spiders" on the album cover are actually spiders? They look a lot more like ticks. 106.69.1.89 (talk) 08:04, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
