Added preliminary ratings (set importance to Mid for WP Scotland because the act is the basis for future school establishment acts). Class doesn't really fit this short article, so classified it as start.

EDUCATION IN THE HIGHLANDS in THE OLDEN TIMES by WILLIAM MACKAY 1921[edit]

An interesting source document now available on-line is EDUCATION IN THE HIGHLANDS in THE OLDEN TIMES by WILLIAM MACKAY 1921

Mackay quotes from the 1616 Act as follows:

" that all his Majesty's subjects,

especially the youth, be exercised and trayned
up in civilitie, godliness, knowledge, and learn-
ing; that the vulgar Ingleeshe tongue be uni-
versallie planted, and the Irish language [that
is, the Gaelic], which is one of the chieff and
principall causes of the continuance of bar-
baritie and incivilitie among the inhabitants of
the Isles and Hylandis, may be abolishit and
 removit."
