Was there any response to this book? It sounds like some kind of advertisement almost. Has Barbara Ehrenreich ever mentioned it?

I agree. There has to be wikipedia-worthy criticism of this book. Goodness knows I've heard plenty from unacceptable sources (e.g. friends, reader reviews). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.139.220.200 (talk) 16:49, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have been unable to find any response to this book; I suspect this is the result of a notability problem.Zhou Xi (talk) 07:42, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How about the criticism that a white male with a college education doing alright supporting just himself for a few months while pretending to be poor doesn't say much? Night Jaguar (talk) 21:24, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I again did a overview of the books response. Seems to be near non existant. 85.226.57.239 (talk) 16:57, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

@ night jaguar::: Is that any different from nickel and dimed, where a communist goes into a capitalist world and goes about in hotels and buys $40 jeans and then says lower class life os a failure? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.66.210.197 (talk) 01:33, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"In achievement of his goal, Shepard resolved not to use his college education, credit history, or any of his previous contacts to help himself. Additionally, he would not beg for money or use services that were not available to others."

Good laugh. So he is able to turn off the education and knowledge that he received and accumulated before this book? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.84.88.181 (talk) 00:05, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I did a Google search and found a book review containing a devastatingly balanced and eloquent critique of the book at the URL < https://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/charleston/adam-shepards-scratch-beginnings-is-kind-compassionate-and-naiumlve/Content?oid=1116476 >. I inserted the most salient quote from this review in the article, as well as the URL itself, within a new "Criticism" section that I added to it. I'm not a regular Wikipedia editor and I don't know how to properly wikify all of it, so any assistance in that vein would be appreciated. (I somewhat gauchely included an appeal to the masses to wikify it for me in the article text, itself, so hopefully someone sees that and it does the trick, haha.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.59.44.65 (talk) 23:37, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Unencyclopedic style[edit]

"You should also read The Book of Story Beginnings. Just a disclaimer, though."
This is so bad, I'm afraid to edit it. I think, however, that it does have some worthy information, so it would better be salvaged.--Adûnâi (talk) 08:50, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
