Lowercase[edit]

Is there a particular reason that the title is lowercase? If there isn't and there's no opposition within a few days, I will change the name to uppercase. Cliff12345 (talk) 20:12, 20 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yes, there is a reason: The name of the key derivation function is spelt this way. Cperciva (talk) 07:44, 6 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
See the RFC title for example. "The scrypt Password-Based Key Derivation Function" -- scrypt is the only lowercase word. That's how it's officially written. -- intgr [talk] 09:07, 6 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why is the function called scrypt? What's the history and meaning behind the name? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.180.34.163 (talk) 07:45, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I guess it is a reference to bcrypt. But i don't know why 's'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.147.40.231 (talk) 16:20, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Update: I'm pretty sure it'a reference to the applied Salsa algorithm, analogous to bcrypt being a reference to the applied Blowfish algorithm. And of course the crypt comes from UNIX password hashing.

Real-World Usage[edit]

I have so far come across scrypt in production usage in the Android 4.4 disk encryption. Is this worth mentioning? Are there any other high-profile users of scrypt? --77.109.64.36 (talk) 14:24, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Litecoin is also a significant user (although it uses a modified scrypt-based hash IIRC). The problem with these "prominent users" lists is that they tend to grow out of hand quickly and end up as WP:Listcruft, as people want to add their favorite app to the list. -- intgr [talk] 15:27, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

External links[edit]

Scrypt#Implementations, wrappers, and distributions is a list of external links in the body of this article. Maybe move some of them to the external links section and delete the rest? --82.136.210.153 (talk) 14:41, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Reason for Password Hashing Competition[edit]

Maybe this section should be filled out a bit more? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 162.255.170.6 (talk) 19:29, 3 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
