Rate Attribute Review Comment
1. Well-written:
1a. the prose is clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience; spelling and grammar are correct. Article flows smoothly. No obvious typos or technical information. Grammar is correct.
1b. it complies with the Manual of Style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation. Lead section is of adequate length. Layout is correct. Barely any hits in the WTW list. Fiction and list incorporation policies do not apply.
2. Verifiable with no original research:
2a. it contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline. Article has a properly formatted reference section.
2b. reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose). Article is well-referenced. Most sentences are cited by The Oregonian and The Seattle Times, both of which I presume to be reliable sources.
2c. it contains no original research. Spotchecking proves that this article doesn't contain original research.
2d. it contains no copyright violations or plagiarism. A lot of the quotes could be cut or paraphrased. I'll give the nominator time to fix this, but until then, this article fails criterion 2D. Quotes have been trimmed down. Pass!
3. Broad in its coverage:
3a. it addresses the main aspects of the topic. The article talks about SCW's interior, exterior, history, and reception, which is information adequate for an article about a business or restaurant. Although it doesn't talk about the restaurant's menu, all they serve there is coffee, and it would be pointless to list every brand of coffee they have there per WP:INDISCRIMINATE.
3b. it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style). The article stays focused.
4. Neutral: it represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each. Article does not try to promote or criticize the restaurant. Reviews are taken into account that proves this restaurant is well liked.
5. Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute. No edit wars have occurred as of me reviewing this article.
6. Illustrated, if possible, by media such as images, video, or audio:
6a. media are tagged with their copyright statuses, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content. Logo has non-free rationale. The rest of the images are taken by Another Believer, and he has licensed these images under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license.
6b. media are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions. Everything except the coffee cup gives visual context for the reader. All images have appropriate captions.
7. Overall assessment. Merry Christmas, Another Believer!

Important issues[edit]

  • I feel as though there are too many images here. You could remove the branded coffee cup and use the multi-image template to group images together.
  • Why "circa 2022"?
  • As noted in the GA table, a lot of the quotes found in the article can be removed or paraphrased. I'll note these changes in a separate section.
  • There shouldn't be any citations in the lead section per WP:CITELEAD. The citations in that section don't really cite anything controversial.

Lead[edit]

  • In addition to the flagship in downtown - might want to clarify that this is downtown Seattle; kind of reads weirdly
  • Shorten the second "Seattle Coffee Works" to SCW (the one right after the word "downtown")
  • Why'd Capitol Coffee Works close?
    • I didn't really come across specific reasons in reliable sources. I would not consider this blog a reliable source, but even it doesn't really go into detail. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:56, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • in the city, in the state of Washington, and in the nation -> "in the city, Washington, and the United States"
  • Just want to clarify: does "flagship" mean the one who owns the branches or is this another SCW location? I'm not really well-versed in business stuff, so yeah
    • Collins Dictionary says, "A flagship store is the most important store in a chain, often with the largest volume of sales, or the most up-to-date formats or layouts." To me, a flagship store is kind of like a business' headquarters, but more in terms of main location instead of an office building. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:59, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Description[edit]

  • The company's "Coffee-drinking Man" imagery - I'd consider the man to be a mascot, but it's up to you to change it.
    • I think of him more as a logo. I searched "Seattle Coffee Works"+"mascot" at Google, and nothing really came up, so I'm reluctant to specifically use "mascot" without sources confirming. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:04, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thrillist has said, "Grab a great espresso at the 'Express Bar', or indulge your inner coffee geek and visit the science lab-esque 'Slow Bar' to observe the skilled baristas as they model various brewing methods." - This entire quote isn't necessary; current citation #5 already verifies that there is an express bar and slow bar.
  • "Amid the frenetic action of downtown is a cafe that truly treats its coffee like wine. Seattle Coffee Works' woody interior is split in two, with a normal walk-up counter and a ‘slow bar’ where staff will brew your coffee to order and discuss its taste notes like enthusiastic oenologists." - You could cut the first sentence, or you could try my paraphrased version:
    • "Lonely Planet describes the 'woody interior', writing about SCW's slow bar."
      • I went with "Lonely Planet has noted its woody interior". Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:09, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Seattle Metropolitan has said, "One of the city's original geeky coffee temples—opened a Capitol Hill outpost, where it's less espresso factory and more reading nook; there's even a hanging macrame chair in the back. -> Seattle Metropolitan said that SCW is "less espresso factory" and "more reading nook", noting the presence of a macrame chair.
  • "Expect a minimal yet on-point approach to coffee, with a handful of espresso and milk drinks plus the standard brewed-to-order slow bar options." - I mean, part of me thinks this quote isn't necessary. You could simply mention SCW has coffee, espresso, and milk drinks, rather than taking someone else's words for it.
  • "carried baked goods" -> "sells"

History[edit]

  • "began as a pop-up shop in an old T-shirt store in downtown Seattle. Inexperienced and new to the Seattle coffee scene, the owners wanted to create a space where people could try espresso from roasters all over the city... A short four years later, they weren't serving everyone else's coffee; they were roasting their own" -> started as a pop-up shop where the owners provided espressos sourced throughout the area. Around four years later, they began to produce their own coffee.
  • SCW has a no-tip policy. - Not sure if this is elaborated on.
  • "After voluntarily boosting wages to $19 an hour in 2017, up from $12, Simsch says workers – who now earn at least $22 an hour after annual wage increases – are generally happier, turnover is nil, and productivity has shot through the roof." -> ...that Simsch thought workers became "generally happier" after the wage was raised, noting that "turnover is nil".
  • Perhaps the COVID-19 link could be replaced with this?
  • "While Simsch had to let 20 staffers go, he transferred many of his remaining 15 workers to the company's new monthly coffee-subscription service and e-commerce coffee sales." - Wait... e-commerce coffee sales? Coffee-subscription? Also change to: Simsch released 20 employees, moving the remaining 15 to a new coffee-subscription service.
  • Should you link chief executive officer?
  • the owner of Victrola Coffee Roasters
  • In 2007, the Daily Journal of Commerce said, "Seattle Coffee Works has opened at 111 Pike Street near Pike Place Market. The cafe combines a museum of Seattle coffee and a tasting center for locally roasted coffees. It has brews from Caffe D'Arte, Caffe Umbria and Vashon Coffee Co. The signature drink is a three shots of espresso served on a silver platter." -> In 2007, the Daily Journal of Commerce described SCW's selection of locally roasted coffees, including brands from Caffe D'Arte, Caffe Umbria, and Vashon Coffee Co.
  • Where'd the flagship store relocate to?

Reception[edit]

  • I think we can safely assume that SCW is considered the best in not only Seattle, or the state, but the entire nation. If you want to, you can add a topic sentence at the top of this section.
  • "On a busy summer day, its proximity to the popular Pike Place Market can make Seattle Coffee Works feel overwhelmingly touristy." -> that since the coffee shop is close the Pike Place Market, SCW could feel "overwhelmingly touristy"
  • She recommended, "Ignore the out-of-towners and sidle over to the Slow Bar, where you can prop yourself on a stool and sample coffees from around the world, prepared in a variety of ways (pressed, siphoned, etc.)." -> and recommended the Slow Bar.
  • Why is "tasting (cupping)" quoted?
  • You could link hot chocolate; it's a beverage, and we are talking about a restaurant that serves beverages.
  • Starbucks is far away enough to be linked twice.
  • ...This unpretentious coffeehouse Downtown is a longstanding Seattle mainstay, serving up a variety of blended brews and other buzzy drinks." -> and commented that SCW serves "blended brews" and "buzzy drinks".

Spotchecking[edit]

  • I will select 12 references at random.
  • #1
    • Green tickY Seattle Coffee Works (SCW) is a third-wave coffee company based in Seattle, in the U.S. state of Washington. - Doesn't really confirm anything. All it describes is the restaurant's features.
  • #7
    • Green tickY Lonely Planet has noted its woody interior.
  • #8
    • Green tickY The Ballard location has been described as "airy". - Really subtle, but it's there.
  • #11
    • Green tickY Established near Seattle's Pike Place Market in 2006, - I'd recommend moving this citation at the end of "Market" instead of "2006"; the source only mentions that SCW is "just steps away from Pike Place Market."
      • I would prefer to keep the inline citation after the punctuation. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:16, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • #24
    • Green tickY "Seattle Coffee Works has opened at 111 Pike Street near Pike Place Market. The cafe combines a museum of Seattle coffee and a tasting center for locally roasted coffees. It has brews from Caffe D'Arte, Caffe Umbria, and Vashon Coffee Co. The signature drink is a three shots of espresso served on a silver platter." - This is literally the entire text.
  • #35
    • Green tickY The taping also allowed customers to sample the Colombia Cup of Excellence for free. - Pretty unbelievable.
  • #42
    • Green tickY and Cascade Coffee Works.
  • #51
    • Green tickY A third location opened at Broadway and Pike on Capitol Hill in 2017. - Also, shouldn't this be in Capitol Hill?
  • #55 Green tickY Cascade Coffee Works opened in South Lake Union in 2017.
  • #61
    • Green tickY The Not for Tourists Guide to Seattle has said, "To these guys, making coffee is not work." - Cite error: 2015 guide points to 2016 one, and the 2016 guide points to the 2017 one. Whoops. This isn't a cite error.
  • #73
    • Green tickY The business was included in the Daily Hive's 2019 list of 10 "Seattle coffee shops aficionados can't afford to miss",
  • #78
    • Green tickY In Moon Baseball Road Trips (2021), Timothy Malcolm said "the service [at the Pine Street location] is so on point that you'll get your cup within three minutes". - Not sure where you got the Pine Street location part from
