I'm unsure how to work this into the article in the absence of solid sources, but perhaps others could enlighten me. Baer's cooperation with Lutheran scholars would likely have made him suspect in the eyes of the Orthodox community at the time. Strangely, however, his Siddur Avodath Yisrael carries an approbation from Salomon Klein of Colmar, who in his day was a fierce opponent of Reform and would have known about Baer's reputation. (Klein is eulogised by S.R. Hirsch in this way; the text of Klein's eulogy can be found in the VIIIth volume of Hirsch' Collected Writings.) Even nowadays this Siddur enjoys popularity amongst Jews from Germany and Holland. Having used it myself, the commentary contains extensive references to the Rishonic commentaries and works of Kabbalah (e.g. Etz Chaim by Chaim Vital), and it is fairly clear that Baer was well versed in that material.
