RfC: should one Serbian Olympian's name be given in basic ASCII?[edit]

Should one Serbian Olympic team member (yes, Ana Ivanović again) be changed from full Serbian Latin script to basic ASCII (all other Olympic team members are in full Serbian script) In ictu oculi (talk) 04:31, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

- Note: contrary to standard en.wp practice for NC Serbian names which use Gaj's Latin alphabet.

We should list it here the way we have it in our article on her, we shouldn't be inconsistent between articles. I'm not sure why it's not with the accented c there, but it isn't. Convince the editors there, and then change it here, not before. --GRuban (talk) 13:30, 21 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Shame on you, User:In ictu oculi. You know very well that this question has been bandied about on Talk:Ana Ivanovic and the current consensus is not to use the accent. Blame Ana for not using the accent that NC Serbian names says she should. I honestly don't care if you want to use a piped link on this article and apparently it's not that big of a deal here, either. Typically RfCs are only used after a talk page discussion hasn't resolved the problem. There is no problem here and you've used the bot to call my attention to your sad attempt to find a new audience to overturn previous consensus. Leave the spelling as is. Chris Troutman, re your language "shame on you" "bandied about" "blame Ana" "sad attempt" please see WP:NPA. As a new user you may not be aware of several things, and one of them here is that there has been plentiful Talk page discussion of this issue before not least on Talk:Ana Ivanovic relating to WP:OPENPARA and WP:MOSBIO, and the existing consensus across BLPs as far as I was aware was that article titles and article body copy are separate issues. You say "it makes no difference to the encyclopedia" but actually it does, otherwise there wouldn't have been 100 edits to remove this one Serbian woman's name across all articles then it does make a difference to the encyclopedia in terms of number of edits and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/WP:CONSISTENCY. You may not like this RfC but the whole purpose of WP:RFC is

I would definitely use Ivanović with the diacritic but then I would prefer to see the article at that destination. When diacritics form a part of a person's name then they should stay. Obviously if she went on to represent another country like an English-speaking state or if we are talking about someone born in the United States whose family abandoned the diacritics before he or she was born then it shouldn't stand but to clarify, I support the diacritic for Ana. beztraga (talk) 12:43, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Use an 'aka Ivanović' in lead - again, it is how the subject refers to herself and in this case, it looks like WP:COMMONNAME, she removes the diacritic when self-referring (her website, Facebook). However, she was presumably born as Ivanović so couldn't we treat her name as we do other 'born as'? EBY (talk) 23:31, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

EBY, the lead of Serbia at the 2012 Summer Olympics does not mention Ana Ivanović, she is included in 2 boxes at the bottom of the page. We cannot say "born as Ivanović" as she still is Serbian and still called Ivanović in all English sources which contain full fonts. In ictu oculi (talk) 02:31, 13 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Be Consistent. I think the key issue is consistency and Ana Ivanovic should be referenced in the same way across all English-language articles, whether with or without the accented c. Jaytwist (talk) 17:31, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This RfC was obviously ill-conceived on my part, although there has been little response it is clear from the replies above both pro and con that wikipedia editors generally expect the title to be accurate and take reference from the title. So this is perceived as a titling issue. Even if it affects 100s of articles including UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors. In ictu oculi (talk) 01:56, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
