Acronym[edit]

Can we put the acronym in the lead? SGTMAJMC? What is it? 72.66.34.142 11:15, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Note on included image[edit]

The image currently included of SgtMaj Kent is of him with Sergeant Major rank insignia, not SgtMajMC rank insignia. The insignia for a sergeant major is a star in the center, versus the SgtMajMC, which is the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor with a star on either side. --Cuervo, not logged in 76.212.160.147 05:14, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Senior Enlisted Member[edit]

The term senior here implies seniority.

3. of higher or the highest rank or standing

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/senior

Also using the term "senior enlisted member" is in keeping with the verbage used in other articles for similar positions Sergeant Major of the Army, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy

If you still feel it is wrong please discuss it before changing it. Thanks. Mikemill 10:59, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a restriction to serving only one term for this rank/billet? At a glance I don't notice anyone serving longer than 4 years, which I assume is the tenure time. 65.165.30.10 22:09, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding is that the SgtMajMC is hand-picked by the Commandant. I assume a new Commandant could keep the same SgtMajMC, if he were so inclined. --Cuervo, not logged in 76.212.160.147 16:24, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sergeant Major Michael Barrett[edit]

I have made some initial edits to include SgtMaj Michael Barrett in the mix. Announcement message from the commandant and his photo in the time line. you experts can make it look good...and I know you will.DODCTR (talk) 18:29, 12 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Official Photo of 17th SMMC[edit]

Sergeant Major Barrett's official photo is now posted on the official Marine Corps page under the “Leaders” tab. Cnuntavong

The photo has been replaced. --Kumioko (talk) 20:18, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sergeants major vs. sergeant majors + salary[edit]

The former is the correct form of the rank, whether a 'normal' Sergeant Major or SGTMAJMARCOR. I noticed it was changed (and then rapidly reverted). Just a reminder here about the correct style to use.

Additionally, I removed the information on salary. I said it didn't have a source, but it is actually available from the USGI don't feel it's particularly relevant and it will undoubtedly change from year to year. On the current (2014) pay chart, basic pay for the most senior enlisted rank and billet of each branch is listed as $7,816.50 72.200.151.13 (talk) 05:12, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Bestwick name/link[edit]

In the next-to-last paragraph, shouldn't Wilbur Bestwick's name link to his wikipedia page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.194.167.238 (talk) 02:21, 29 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Flag above portrait?[edit]

The article for Sgt Major of the Army includes an image of the insignia flag of the associated rank above the portrait of the incumbent. This article would be improved by the addition of the corresponding USMC flag, assuming it exists — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.167.83.225 (talk) 00:22, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Photo and letter[edit]

SgtMaj,

I'm retired 1stSgt David Treviono 1968-1992, I have put together a Marine reunion

for the Marines out of my home town of Ecorse Mi on May 21st 2016. The oldest Marine is Mr Filon Beteag who is 93. He served in 1944 in the pacific and in Korea, he got out as a Ssgt.

I was wondering if you had the time if you could send a signed photo of yourself to Ssgt Beteag with a note or letter, that we could present to him.

Also if you had the time, if you could write a letter that I or retired SgtMaj Al Gourley could read at this Marine reunion.

We come from a small town of 4000 and we have had about 40 Marines out of this town.

If so, please send to David Trevino 235 Atwood Trenton Mi 48183

Cell Number 231-215 3566 My e-mail is davidtrevino@hotmail.com

Thank you so much and Semper Fi

SgtMajMarCor[edit]

Per the MARINE CORPS MANUAL W/CH 1-3, Paragraph 2102.1 (page 2-8), the correct grade of rank title is "Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps". Per the MARINE CORPS INDIVIDUAL RECORDS ADMINISTRATION MANUAL (IRAM) MARINE CORPS ORDER (MCO) P1070.12K W/CH 1, Paragraph 6002.10.A (page 6-36), the official abbreviation is "SgtMajMarCor". As with all sergeants major, the correct "form of address" is simply, "Sergeant Major". For example, in official documents or correspondence, or when being verbally introduced, the correct form is "Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps" or if written, printed, or typed, "SgtMajMarCor", informally it may be abbreviated as "SMC." After the initial formal introduction using the full title, it is then appropriate to refer to, or address, the incumbent as simply, "Sergeant Major."

This usage differs from the forms used for the Commandant of the Marine Corps (CMC), in that the "Commandant of the Marine Corps" is an official billet title only, and NOT a grade of rank title. Per the MARINE CORPS MANUAL, Paragraph 2101.1.a, the senior Marine Corps officer grade of rank is "General." There is no grade of rank unique to the billet of the CMC, and unlike the SgtMajMarCor, the CMC wears no unique grade of rank insignia. In fact, the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, and the current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as some of the Commanders of United States Unified Commands are all currently commissioned in the the grade of "General."

I am adding the above comments here, as well as on the "Talk:United States Marine Corps" page, due to confusion re this issue. CobraDragoon (talk) 15:00, 16 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

In the lede: “billet”?[edit]

Eh? This is wikilinked to a type of building. Something’s gone wrong? Boscaswell talk 09:04, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

So what is the SMMC, exactly?[edit]

It’s not explained in the article. Is the SMMC purely ceremonial? What’s the position all about? Boscaswell talk 09:08, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I note that in the Marine Corps article it says: “ The Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps is the senior enlisted Marine and acts as an adviser to the commandant.” Well fir the uninitiated, like me, that’s useful information. I don’t understand why there’s nothing like that in this article.Boscaswell talk 09:13, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
