Is it really "spin" or magnetic flux polarity?[edit]

The head needs to fly on the electromagnetic surface of the disk to place the spin up or down.

As far as I know, at least for floppy disks and earlier hard drives, the storage is still classically magnetic, i.e. the information is encoded using flux polarity inversions. Spin would be a quantum effect. Is that really what is used in a hard disk?
