Ralph Albert Blakelock (1847-1919)[edit]

I propose adding a section on Blakelock, not only because Sheldon has the most extensive collection of this increasingly important artist's work, but also because the museum, in conjunction with the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, has established the Nebraska Blakelock Inventory in the UNL Archives & Special Collections. The Nebraska Blakelock Inventory "represents forty years of research at the university by Norman Geske, emeritus director of UNL’s Sheldon Museum of Art. In this pilot web site, the Nebraska Blakelock Inventory Category I works-- ones for which clear provenance exists-- are now searchable," and "the site’s wider scope is to provide additional resources on Blakelock’s life and work."[1]

According to museum staff, Professor Geske is legendary, and his scholarship on Blakelock is widely recognized as unparalleled. Additionally, the museum mounted a critically well-received exhibition in 2008 entitled "The Unknown Blakelock" in conjunction with this important and unique body of research. After its run at Sheldon, the exhibit traveled to New York.
