Since the biography of S.D.Goitein in your encyclopedia is very short and lacking in information, I decided to write a new biography and suggest that you include it .I am the daughter of Prof.S. D. Goitein , so this is first hand information. His portrait was taken by the late photographer Aliza Holz in Jerusalem in 1970. All the rights are mine.
My name is Ayala Goitein Gordon, 4 Ruth Str. Jerusalem Israel.93101. My e-mail is : amiravg@ekmd.huji.ac.il

Please someone interested in the topic contact Ayala and clarify what she means under "all rights are mine" `'Míkka 17:17, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have tried to do some basic cleanup on this page, though obviously much remains to be done; I have deleted the quote "he has become the creator of a true sociology of Muslim civilization that is based not on preconceived theories from outside, but the authentic facts he has discovered" (F. Rosenthal, ,Yale Un.1985 .) because it is not adequately sourced and I cannot verify it. Languagehat (talk) 21:21, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Birthdate[edit]

The beginning of the article says 1900 and that would fit with the dates he spent at university (1918-1923), but in the middle it says he was 50 in 1957. Which is correct? Adam Bishop (talk) 03:32, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"An especially rich Geniza with a large volume of correspondence was discovered in Old Cairo containing thousands of documents dating from the 9th to the 13th centuries."[edit]

I'm too lazy to do the work but I think the real dates are much broader than this. The Jewish community in Cairo declined after the 13th century leading to a reduction in the quantity of documents added to the geniza but the community still existed and documents were added.

I also don't remember Goiten's writings on the geniza mentioning anything at all before the 11th century. I have read AMS in the original multi-volume work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.85.54.137 (talk) 14:10, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

His most important book: "Muhammad's Islam: how a new religion developed under the shadow of Judaism",- is not mentioned[edit]

This book is not mentioned at all. it is consider to be his masterpiece. It was composed based on several lectured of him. and is out of print even in the hebrew version ( it was written in hebrew). But this book has to be mentioned. 84.109.126.80 (talk) 13:51, 3 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
