The link to the German article is not correct, because "Side-Scrolling Beat ’em up" is not the German version of the sidescroller article. So I suggest that the link to the German article should be removed.

Merge into Platform game?[edit]

It seems to me like this page should be merged into Platform game Kamahl 11:31, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. In fact, this article has zero references, and the contents are more an essay than an article. Still, I'm not sure a redirect would work, as there are a lot of side-scrolling video games which are not platformers. I also agree that this should be merged or deleted. Side scrolling is more of a subgenre of platforming/shoot-em-up/etc... Perhaps genres that often have side-scrolling type games should have a subsection added for side-scrollers? Andyscout (talk) 07:03, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

right to left[edit]

I remember several games where at least some levels had you move right to left instead of left to right. But not the whole game. I'm still sure there are some, after all there are many 1000 of such games out there. I guess the reason the vast majority is left to right is that that's how we are reading/writing (at least when using English or Japanese writing) - so maybe should look for early Hebrew games or other languages with right-to-left scripts? Not sure though, this was just a guess.. would be interesting to find a reference for the reason and add to the article (or better to Platform game). --Allefant (talk) 13:02, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Although not the whole game, a Streets of Rage game, the first one I think. There are 8 levels, the first 7 scroll the typical left to right. But the final stage scrolled the opposite way, right to left; maybe to make it awkward for gamers that were really used to the left to right way. Carlwev (talk) 03:41, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Genre"[edit]

While I recognize that side-scrolling is an important concept in video game history, calling this a genre is crossing the line. Its a presentation foramat, but every game that can be classified as a side-scroller truly has a real genre to assign it to. There are platform games (yes -- anyone playing Super Mario Bros must admit that jumping from platform to platform to conquer enemies and get to the end of the level is the purpose. Side-scrolling is the format in which its presented, but Platform would be the genre), shooters (again, the point of Defender is shooting down all the enemies, not scrolling from side to side).

I've removed all references indicating that side-scrolling is a genre. The general quality of the article has not been touched other than to refer to side-scrolling as a format instead of a genre. Dawynn (talk) 00:47, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Delete "Use of side-scrolling" section?[edit]

Most of the "Use of side-scrolling" section is poorly written, and the content itself is mostly I feel not necessary for the article and/or stated somewhere else in the article. Also, there are literally no citations in the section. Overall, if the section isn't deleted, it needs to have a lot of work done on it. Any thoughts? agreed. this section acts as a pretty poor summary of information in the "History" section. if anything it should be deleted, but maybe some content could be rewritten and moved to the lead since it is a bit short.

"First Smoothly Scrolling PC Game"[edit]

Are we really going to take that poorly researched and misinformed Guinness blurb as evidence of the first "smoothly scrolling PC game"? I mean, Snokie had smooth scrolling and that came out on the C64 in 1983, Trollie Wollie in 1984, Uuno Turhapuro Muuttaa Maalle in 1986, and that's only for the C64.
