Someone has filled the post independence section with irrelevant information. Instead of the post independence history of the Sikh Regiment, we are treated to a very poorly written and inaccurate factoid piece on Sikhs in general. War Cry Translation[edit]

Creation of a Sikh Regiment within the British Army[edit]

I was wondering if it would be appropriate to add a small section on the high level talks that were going on within the UK about the possibility of setting up a Sikh regiment (recruited from the British Sikh community) in the modern British Army. This had the support of UK Sikh community leaders, the military top brass and of high profile individuals such as the Prince of Wales.

Strong claims, weak sources[edit]

There have been some discussions on fr: about this article. It is clear that the battle of Saragarhi is probably never mentioned in French schools nowadays. I imagine it is possible that it was indeed mentioned "as part of the syllabus on heroic valour" before or during WWI, but such a claim should only be reintroduced if backed-up by credible historical sources citing French primary sources. The other problem is the purported list of eight stories of collective bravery published by UNESCO. While there are numerous Indian sources claiming that the battle is part of it, the list itself is nowhere to be found. Presenting this claim as fact would require that the list were exactly referenced.

Both claims are present on numerous Web sites, but often together and always with very similar wording, and without any additional details. To me, this looks very much like a hoax or urban legend, fabricated to bolster the significance of the battle and picked up because it flatters Indian nationalism. _R_ (talk) 11:40, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

HELP!!! NEEDED for Article on Sikh Rajputs[edit]

Someone put a tag on "Sikh Rajputs" article that it will be deleted in five days etc., this article can not be deleted as Sikh Rajputs exist and most claims made in the article are true as well known to local Indians in Punjab only the need is that some interested and knowledgeable editors with access to proper history books etc. can eventually come forward and develop the article properly in time, quoting credible sources. Foreign born and raised editors with no direct local Indian knowledge are requested not to vandalize it as per their own fastly held thoughts and beliefs.

Are all regiments in indian army based on castes[edit]

Indian army regiments are not comprised of one castes but consist of other castes as well [1] one person name Nitinmlk extended confirm users always try to create influence of his caste to society Mlk short form of Malik he is jat by caste and always add jat sikh in sikh regiments ,no regiments in indian army comprise of one caste only, in sikh regiments not only jatt but also other agriculturist castes also a part of sikh regiments one example i will give you subedar joginder singh parmvir chakar award winners he was part of 1sikh regiments but not a jat sikh many more examples i have i have warned several times to mr nitinmlk he after some days again add jat sikh only in sikh regiments

Recent disruption[edit]

This article is one of the multiple articles continuously targeted by the various sockpuppets of Punjabier. This sock master is an SPA who adds OR and unsourced puffery about Saini caste. They also either blank well-sourced content about Jat Sikhs or replace it with OR/misrepresentations. And their latest suspected sock puppet is editing in the same vein: [1]. I will file an SPI about the latest suspect in a day or two, but the purpose of mentioning this here is to give an idea of the similar disruption happening at multiple articles.

Anyway, the Sikh Regiment is a "single class" regiment. Its soldiers are recruited from Jat Sikhs. And this detail is covered in multiple scholarly/academic sources, e.g.

For example, all the Sikh units in the Indian Army do not come from the same mother regiment. There are two regiments, the Sikh Infantry Regiment (composed of high caste Jat Sikhs) and the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment (composed of lower caste Mazbhi Sikhs). The Mazbhi Sikh is the "untouchable" of the Sikh community, and is looked down upon by the Jat Sikh, so it is not possible to recruit them into one regiment.

Moreover, with the exception of Gurkhas (recruited in Nepal), Sikhs remain the only community to have infantry regiments drawn exclusively from their own numbers: the Sikh Regiment (manned, though not officered, by high-caste Jat Sikhs) and the Sikh Light Infantry (manned entirely by Mazhabi, or Scheduled Caste, "untouchable" Sikhs.

Some regiments, such as the Sikh Regiment and Sikh Light Infantry, are “single class,” and therefore recruit combat troops only from members of a specified class, such as Jat Sikhs and Mazhabi and Ramdasia Sikhs.

And this is happening since the British Raj era:

The Jat appropriation of the panth and its politics is historical. It is believed that the Jat influx into Sikhism began at some point during the period of the fifth Guru, Guru Angad. During the reign of Ranjit Singh (1799–1839), the Jat Sikhs formed nearly 30 per cent of the nobility and a major part of his Khalsa army. However, it was during the colonial period that the Sikh militant discourse came to be championed by the Jat constituents of the panth. In this regard, the portrayal of Sikh martial-ness was essentially a reference to the military skills, loyalty and robust physical features of the Jats. Thus, in recruitment to the British Army, the Sikh regiment would be open only to the Jat Sikhs. Status hierarchy and caste distinction were consciously maintained, so much so that Sikhs lower in ranking would find recruitment in separate regiments.

Regarding the sources added by the aforementioned editors, they added a fake source with this edit: the source doesn't mention regiment anywhere, let alone details of recruitment. In this edit, they seem to have copy-pasted content from somewhere regarding the recruitment of sportsmen under the Unit Headquarters Quota, in which wards/brothers of the regiment's (ex)servicemen are selected. As explained in the Priority for Enrolment section at the Indian Army's official site, this quota is for the kins of those who have already served or are serving in the regiment, i.e. they would be Jat Sikhs in the case of combat troops and non-Jat Sikhs in the case of officers. Note that we are supposed to sum up the information from the reliable and independent source, rather than trying to WP:SYNTHESIS details like this. But I am doing this just for clarity. Anyway, with this edit, they provided some reference with a fake article title. And with this edit, they provided yet another fake ref. This is all that I could find among their recent disruption. Query regarding an edit[edit]

Around two months ago, a good-faith editor restored a version from 2019 with this edit. They restored this version from 4 March 2019 (see here). That edit blanked the whole History section and various other seemingly sourced details, although I haven't cross-checked the two years of intervening edits. So, Quisqualis, was it a mistake? Did you check all the content added between 4 March 2019 and 23 April 2021? If not, then it would be better to restore this version, i.e. the version preceding your this edit. I would like to tell you that the highest devorated regiment of indian army is Kumaon Regiment, Ranikhet and the 2nd highest decorated remgiment is Sikh Regiment .
