Propose splitting off [[[Sikhism in the United States military]]

Looking at the Military section here, I'm thinking one could leave the first paragraph, add a few lines summarising the others, and then move the current detailed content to a new article, Sikhism in the United States military. That way we could add more info about Sikhs who served prior to the uniform issue of the 1980s, maybe add some photos of Sikhs in US uniform, etc. Thoughts? Population Confusion

According the the main article on Sikhs, the estimate in the U.S. is 200,000. I'm sure the 2001 census estimate on this page is the most accurate, but something should be done to clear up the contradiction.71.222.195.97 (talk) 02:42, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Presently neither population figure given in the article is referenced from a reliable source, therefore anyone can place any number right now in the article and it can be challenged with a fact tag. I've seen estimates as high as a million, mainly counting themselves within the Indian American population, to 400,000. There was an effort leading up to the 2010 census for Sikhs to self identify to provide a more accurate accounting of their population in the United States, so until those numbers are released in some accessible fashion from a reliable source the best we have is speculation. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 00:51, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Is that considered a reliable source? I suggest taking that to WP:RSN, and if the community validates it, added the figure with an appropriately formatted reference. That will go a great deal towards improving this article. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 20:46, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Los Angeles Times is a reliable source, presently the source previously previded, has not been confirmed as a reliable source, and until that time, I would not support giving a range, with one of the numbers being sourced by the one previously given. Please see what other editors think at WP:RSN, and if they agree that the source is reliable then by all means make the edit.

Re:Sikh Personalities

Let's keep this article to people who actual are/were Sikh. Not people who may have been and are now Christians, Muslims, etc. The barticle otherwise is confusing for the reader and may possibly controvene our own Wikipedia rules WP:ALIVE as people may find it offensive. Hi,

I saw that Nikki Haley was on this page and removed her again...

As far as I know, she has never publicly identified as a Sikh or an American Sikh. She maintains that her parents are Sikh, but that's it.

Ethnically, she is still Punjabi and the daughter of two Sikh immigrants, but religiously, she is not a Sikh. AnyBurro9312 (talk) 01:55, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

PlAN FOR CHANGES

Some of the articles about racially motivated attacks against Sikh people to include more examples in the Discrimination after the September 9/11 category. I also plan on editing that to just Discrimination because Sikh people faced injustice and discrimination even before 9/11. This will cover the Sikh experience in america from the early Sikh farmers that lived in California in the 1900s. I would also rearrange that paragraph and make bullet points for every example ordered chronologically so it’s easier for the reader to understand. It will also be easier to notice the increase in the number of these attacks after 9/11. I plan to add some history of Sikhism in the introduction and delete the second paragraph where it talks about the attacks after 9/11. I think as an introduction it would be better to give some history and describe Sikh practices and beliefs and how Sikh people have built Gurdwara’s all over America. The history title will become History and Evolution of Sikhism. After that I see in the article the previous editor touched upon Bhagat Singh Thind. I plan to dedicate a whole section called Bhagat Singh Thind v. United States under the History and Evolution of Sikhism section, where I will give more details about his story as probably one of the first Sikhs who were granted the American citizenship. The occupation section would be removed. The policing paragraph will be pasted in the history and Evolution of Sikhism part along with more recent examples. The history and evolution section will come before the demographics section. I also plan on touching upon the move towards orthodoxy of Sikhs as some of them don’t want to wear a comb and have long beard and the reason of this shift. The Elected Officials paragraph will be updated with more elected Sikh people and placed at the bottom of the page. I also plan on adding a section on Sikh initiatives to help their communities and the people around them and educate others about their religion like during Covid for example. USA 2020 Census Results

Can someone please add USA 2020 census results, as it was announced that "Sikhs" would be counted as a separate ethnic group. Can someone please add this data to the wiki page, and to the appropriate sections, by state, if possible? I cannot seem to find this data.

Relevance of `Controversies` section?

I saw that there was a controversies section containing the murder of Mandeep Kaur.

While this murder is indeed reprehensible, I feel like it warrants it's own page instead of being shoehorned on this page.
