This article is a copyright violation from the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. The passage from "[He] entered the army" to "brevet colonel" is verbatim. The article can be salvaged by using the DNB public-domain text. Charles Matthews (talk) 10:00, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed obvious copyvio and partly rewritten what remains, thus reducing this article to a stub.[1] The material I've removed should not ne restored unless it has been substantially rewritten in a manner not resembling the original work. Franamax (talk) 02:44, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
