John Milner identification[edit]

Tobin acquired the Bedford Hours after it had been in the hands of John Milner.

According to Alan Noel Latimer Munby, Connoisseurs and Medieval Miniatures, 1750-1850 (1972), p.9, this was "John Milner, of York St., Portman Square," who had the MS as "an unredeemed pledge for a loan which different sources record as being £500 and £800." Here York St. appears to be a slip for York Place. See [1] from 1823. See https://www.jstor.org/stable/24900188 for the comment (p.130 note) that the MS was not in the 1819 Whiteknights sale, and the loan was c.1828. A report in the Dorset County Chronicle - Thursday 12 November 1829 (https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000408/18291112/043/0004) of the marriage at Oakford of Edward Tell to Hannah Milner stated that she was "youngest daughter of John Milner, Esq., of York Place, Portman Square and Stockeridge House, Devon." That may be Stuckeridge House, near Oakford and Tiverton. A John Milner of Stuckeridge House had sons at Blundell's School, from 1830.[2] These were John, Philip Splidt and Christian Splidt. (Splidt is a Danish name.) There is a chancery case from 1865, Milner v. Milner, involving Philip Splidt and Christian Splidt and others: it is reasonable to assume this is the same family. Picking up on Pentecost Milner mentioned in that case, she was (according to the Ancestry site [3]) possibly "Born in Aldgate, Middlesex, England on 08 Dec 1791 to John Milner and Pentecost Cleaver Parnell." And "Pentecost Milner passed away on 28 Mar 1874 in Middlesex, England." Parents "John Milner 1759 - 1834" and "Pentecost Cleaver Parnell 1757 - 1809".
