Wikipedia Mekong Hydropower Initiative[edit]

Hello friends

We are currently in the process of introducing to Wikipedia pages on all of the dams in the Mekong; as well as those planned for the Mekong. While we accept that it seems a little odd for us to introduce dams that have not yet been built (we note that our page on the Prek Liang 1 has been deleted), this is part of a wider debate on hydropower development in the Mekong, and the cumulative impact of these dams on the river's hydrology and ecology. This is a very current and substantial debate - please see the bibliographies we introduced to the Mekong and the Mekong River Basin Hydropower pages to give you an idea of the size and scope of this debate. Hydropower in the Mekong is a very lucrative business proposition attracting financing from a sluice of different sources; it has hydro-political and geo-political implications - e.g. the finger pointing at China for their dams, and the alleged relationship between their operating rules and downstream drought and/or flooding. The debate has attracted the likes of International Rivers, the World Wildlife Fund, the Challenge Program on Water and Food, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and many, many others.

Hence, we submit that providing factual and accurate data about the river's commissioned dams, those under construction and those planned can contribute to a wider understanding of this debate, and help to fuel it. Given that the river is one of the world's great rivers, has a unique hydrology, and a biodiversity second only to the Amazon, this is a worthwhile public information service.

While introducing stand-alone pages on planned and under-construction dams may not be the best way of getting this information out there, we would appreciate ideas for how we can provide this service, without violating any of Wikipedia's protocols. We would also appreciate advice and guidance on whether or not we should be linking up with particular Wikipedia projects. Rechmaduong (talk) 07:58, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If a planned or under-construction dam is clearly notable as it has received significant media attention, there's no harm in creating an article. If someone doesn't find it notable enough they will nominate it for deletion to let the community decide. One way you could include the dams which aren't notable enough for an article is by creating a List of dams on the Mekong or something similar. See WP:FL for examples of existing, high quality lists. Also, if you need any help with the formatting, just drop a note on my talk page. —focus 15:03, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oh and WP:WikiProject Thailand of course. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 19:45, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I left comments regarding the PRODing and recommendation for several of the proposed dams here.--NortyNort (Holla) 12:04, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
