Comment[edit]

Talk:Snooty I helped the keeper in 1960 and 1961, feeding Baby Snoots and, also, the two hippos and tank of piranhas they had on the Municipal Pier at that time. After an absence of two decades, Snooty remembered me! I was thrilled. I've therefore added a bit more information on the intelligence studies done at Mote Marine. Of particular note: Baby Snoots was named thus due to the snuffle sounds he made while surfacing at the water when a calf. In 1961, he was still being called "Baby Snoots" and was still at the Municipal Pier. My cousin, Ron Vargo, a decade or so later was manager of the first Planetarium of the South Florida Museum, which burned down: he remembers that Snooty was named Snooty before the planetarium burned. Sometimes records are not that well kept: in 1986, when I saw (now called) Snooty again after so many years, he became very excited. He also had some serious skin problems and fungus. I explained who I had been, and was allowed to look at his feeding charts, and somehow, instructions for his diet had been partially lost--the page stopped at the bottom with the next few familiar lines missing. I told the keepers that Snooty needed fruit in his diet, such as pineapple, apples, etc. to keep his skin in good condition. They also were feeding too few carrots. Once the carrots and fruits came back into his diet, Snooty's skin problems began to clear up. It is possible that the original reason Baby Snoots was named has been similarly lost. It certainly has nothing to do with being 'snobbish' ! He's very friendly, and I could swear he was crying when he tried to haul himself right out of the tank to greet me. Because of his skin condition, they didn't want me to touch hm--though one person there finally remembered me, and then I was allowed to cuddle him again. That's when I asked to see his diet records. truehistoryjvbaTruehistoryjvba (talk) 18:50, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Snooty update[edit]

We have learned more about manatees and their nutritional needs since Snooty was born. Snooty's diet is primarily green - romaine lettuce, kale, cabbage and broccoli. Manatees will eat between 10 and 20 percent of their body weight depending on their age. Snooty is a mature adult, his metabloism is slower and he naps more than he once did. He eats about 80 pounds of greens a day and about 2 pounds of carrot and sweet potato used as conditioning foods. Snooty's last exam found him at 1215 pounds (average for a male manatee) and 9 feet 7 inches long. As a still healthy manatee, Snooty looks forward to his 62nd birthday.--Marilyn Margold, Director Parker Aquarium, South Florida Museum 18:53, 3 February 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mmargold (talkcontribs)
