What happened[edit]

Article leaves out what happened to the games. -- Esemono (talk) 08:33, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think these games must have been revived in the Communist Bloc. I am really surprised that there is no reference to this. I have in front of me a book from Czechoslovakia called "Ceskoslovenska spartakiada 1980", published by Olympia/Sport with many pictures, each of thousands of people in gym clothes and military formations, conducting normal gymnastic exercises. The collective formations are beautiful in themselves. They convey a powerful socialist message (and I am not a socialist). All ages from 5 ish upwards. Maybe it's in under "Spartakiada". Barcelona 1936[edit]

I'm surprised there is no mention of these games. Organised in opposition to the Olympic games in Berlin, they were disrupted when the Spanish civil war started the day they should have begun. I remember a British cyclist telling me how he and the rest of the team had to run back to the hotel as a firefight started.
