I have removed a section on the Marxist view of the Family. It is written in an unencyclopaedic manner: it takes a preaching tone, lacks sufficient references, and uses bad English. It also seems out-of-place here - either the perspectives of a range of world views should be discussed or none. TimRR 04:37, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merge of content[edit]

I have merged the best content from the sociology of fatherhood/motherhood articles here and replaced with a redirect. I had raised the topic of a merge but these articles gain little attention - I have tried to be bold.

It is debatable, furthermore, whether the sociology of childhood article should also be merged into this one (again with 'sociology of childhood' as the subheading of a redirect). In many cases in the sociology portal, we have a number of separate articles diluting the overall coherency.--Tomsega (talk) 07:21, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with the merge. May I suggest in the future to make a notice of such proposals at WP:SOCIO?

Comment on section: Statistics on American Families[edit]

In looking at the section "Statistics on American Families," I noticed that some of the data does not specify the date of the statistic. Since these types of statistics can change, I think a date is important.

Some did note the dates and even the source in the list, but I think a citation link would be better. Especially for the data that is located online (like US Census data). Kathyfeller (talk) 21:12, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sociology of Interracial Intimacy[edit]

The fact that Chinese and White intermarriage became criminalized in 1901 was more than just inhumane.

In 1942, the American Psychiatric Association declared that Homosexuality was a disease.

This is neither a statistic, nor related to families, and has since been removed from the DSM. A few other entries can similarly be removed because they don't seem to relate to the topic.

Sociology of Motherhood[edit]

I think that there should be an elaboration on not just the roles of mothers in different societies. I think that there should be some elaboration on opting out for mothers and when mothers from other countries travel to other countries to earn money. They only elaborated on roles not so much different types of motherhood.

- I agree that this is problematic, as the students, well-intentioned though they be, are completely rewriting entire sections of the article without obtaining consensus for such rewrites. It is one thing to expand an article with new information, but to overwrite existing, well-sourced material requires discussion first. WikiDan61^ChatMe!_ReadMe!! 11:45, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  - @WikiDan61: I haven't noticed that. That is indeed troublesome. Can you link diffs in which old content was overwritten? PS. Please note I am leaving talk page questions for all the (presumed) students, but they have not replied yet. Worldwide view issues[edit]

This article was tagged with worldwide views cleanup template in 2013, but it was never explained here. I second it; as usual this article tends to focus on American society too much. American family is not the same as British, Chinese or Nigerian. Keep this in mind. If a source discusses American family, this should be clarified, and date from American sources such as US census should not be used to generalize to findings on family in general, but only on the American one--_{Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here} 01:14, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
