Cavalry reference[edit]

It is quite difficult to find sources for this so-called Sogdian cavalry. There are texts that describe how the Sassanian cavalry was composed of warrior-nobles (e.g. clibanarii) as well as the elite Zhayedan. The heavy cavalry was also supported by non-Sassanian light cavalry but this unit was composed of allies such as Gelani (Guilani), Albani, Hephthalites, Kushans, and the Khazars (see Sassanian Army). There is a reference (Armies of the Dark Ages by Ian Heath, p. 175) that cited mounted Sogdian warriors but this involved the Sogdian horse archers. • Sogdiana provided contingents of soldiers to the Achaemenid kings, but not to Sasanids, because Sogdiana never was a part of Sasanid Empire.Khorazmiy (talk) 20:19, 27 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's not quite correct. Sogdia was part of the early Sasanians, and briefly under Hormizd IV as well. But yeah generally their eastern extent was at the Oxus. Honestly this article should just be deleted, I created it way back in the day when I had no idea what I was doing. --HistoryofIran (talk) 20:23, 27 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry but no thanks, I'm not basing my statement on my personal thoughts, but on sources. --HistoryofIran (talk) 20:37, 27 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
