Exchange rates[edit]

The exchange rates in this article are probably based on very old official rates. In 2005, the free market change was around 20000 SOS per USD - and there is no official market anymore since 15 years! --195.186.239.158 17:47, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that the rate was around 20000 SOS per USD between 2002 and 2004, but not anymore in 2005:

Untill March 2006, the SOS recovered to 13400 per USD:

I just read in an old printed currency lexicon (Währungstabelle 1991/92, Schweizerische Bankgesellschaft, Zürich 1991) that the official value of the SOS was based on a currency basket until the breakdown of the political system in January 1991. As of June 15, 1990 this official rate was 1434.50 SOS/USD - that's quite close to the automatically created daily exchange rates we can find on internet (yahoo, XE, but also oanda). At the same date, the free market change was "around 2000" SOS/USD. In the reissue of the same lexicon in 1994, they write that the free market rate was around 5000 SOS/USD in the south and around 4500 SOS/USD in the north of the country (by June 1993, two years after the beginning of the anarchy). Untill now, there is no working banking system in Somalia - that's why it's quite dubious where internet currency converters take their information about the SOS/USD rate from. I conjecture that they still calculate automatically, based on the old currency basket. In any case, the information provided by the mentioned pdf files seems to be much more trustworthy... so I change the information in the article.

Banknotes[edit]

Well under islamic banknotes they are recorded as Mogadishu North Forces amd The Banknotes of Somalia – Part 3 they are refered to as the New shilling to replace the old at 1000 old to 1 new shilling. Enlil Ninlil 07:00, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yeah, I have those 2. 20 shilling can be quite rare. I didn't know it's meant for "new" shilling (1000 old shilling). A second source for the ratio would be nice. [1] is a nice resource. Move?[edit]

Re the discussion on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Numismatics/Style, should this be moved to Somali shilin? Given the use of several languages on this currency, it's going to be awkward whatever we do, but shilin is the Somali name, so I'm in favour.

Use of money[edit]

Guitar shaped coin[edit]

Apparently in 2004 the government of Somalia created a coin the shape of famous guitars that is circulating around the internet. Is these true Somali coins or not? Historical exchange rates - April 2015[edit]

In the "Historical exchange rates" section of this article, I can see 23,000 SOS/USD in April 2015.

However, the cited source (an archive) https://web.archive.org/web/20150518100113/http://www.centralbank.gov.so/board.html tells 694.95 SOS/USD (with date of May 18, 2015).

And something similar for the sources from the "Current SOS exchange rates" table:
