In 1967 developers Norman J. Cohen, and Max and Phillip Stollman, of Biltmore properties, developed "Somerset Mall". Saks Fifth Avenue was the first department store to open and was followed by an upscale,one-floor mall and second anchor store, Bonwit Teller in 1969. Somerset Mall was designed by Louis G. Redstone Associates and was at the time, the largest indoor mall in Southeast Michigan. Somerset Mall was a segment of a 50 million dollar development called "Somerset Park" and included a 2,226 unit apartment complex, Nine hole golf course, Somerset Mall, and Somerset Plaza.
