I completely agree with the comparison between the novel and American Beauty...the only difference is the patience required to read the rambling novel, and the protagonist never wins, and is depressingly aware that he can never win.

I thought it was interesting how the only one of his three kids who he names is Derek, the brain damaged child. Perhaps Derek grows up to be the socially awkward son, whom he relates so intimately with. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.109.253.201 (talk) 07:12, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Stream of Consciousness[edit]

I'm reading this novel now, and have only read through the first chapter. It is not yet approaching stream of consciousness style. It is merely first person narrative, well structured into simple syntax and organized concepts.
