Was really the W700 the successor if the w800?[edit]

This article states that there is no limit to the size of a Sony memory stick duo used in the phone. The official site says that 2GB is the maximum. Other sites suggest that using larger capacity disks may result in phone trouble over the long term. I've been unable to find any verifiable info which suggests that this is not the case. Have I missed something? Endaoneill 13:37, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I noticed that and had thought that 2GB was the maximum. http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=us&lc=en&ver=4000&template=ps1_1_2_3&zone=ps&lm=ps1_1&pid=10245 says that the limit is 4, though I could swear it was less than that when I read the support lists for the Memory Sticks themselves. Certainly a page quoted as a source in the article says the limit is 2.. LaFoiblesse 22:38, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Successor & Memory stick size[edit]

The W810 was the successor of the W800, getting rid of both most failure prone "features", namely the camera cover, which broke easily in a mechanical manner (spring mechanism broke), as well as electrical manner (the switch used to turn the camera mode on when opening the cover broke quite often), and the very failure prone joystick, being replaced by a button-pad.
The display was also replaced with a newer one which had more vivid colors and was also a lot sharper than the W800's original one.
The W700 was mainly an attempt in reducing the production cost at the end of the W800's life span. In fact, the W700 and the W800 are 100% identical internally (technically, only real difference is the casing color), except for the camera module (lacking Autofocus on the W700). One can replace the camera module with one out of a K750 or W800, and flash the firmware of one of those 2 phones, essentially converting a W700 into a full K750 or W800. (i've done this before. pretty easy actually.)

As for the maximum memory stick size, the first announced limit was 2GB, which was most likely because this was the biggest memory stick size available at the time the phone was launched. However, using adapters (memory stick micro (M2) to Pro duo), one can actually use memory sticks with 4GB and 8GB capacity with no problems whatsoever. Only drawback is that browsing the files via the phone's internal file manager can get painfully slow if the card is 3/4 full and the phone's firmware is one of the really early versions (R1L002, R1N035, R1NA005). There are no performance problems with newer firmware versions (R1AA008, R1BA013, R1BC002). The firmware i'm using on my own W800 (R1BC002) has no problems with a 4GB Memory stick micro in a pro duo adaptor.
I've also tried the 8GB MS Micro from my newer phone (W810), and it also works fine.

  • 100% technically identical phones: K750, W800, D750 (T-Mobile branded version, a mix out of a blue-ish W800 case with the firmware functionality of a K750 (lacking walkman))
  • mostly technically identical: W700 (camera module lacking autofocus, otherwise identical to the above)
  • major differences (display, keypad (lacking joystick), no camera cover), but based on the same hardware platform as the above: W810
