To sally[edit]

To sally also in bold because of the redirect on "to sally" --Philip Baird Shearer 11:40, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Naval usage[edit]

I'm not enough of an expert on naval usage to make the edit, but I think the verb "sortie" is often used in describing ship movements before a battle. If someone else can improve the article, please do. Oaklandguy (talk) 07:23, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Siege warfare section[edit]

I restored this section. The rationale given by DexDor when he removed the section after it was blanked by an anonymous user is utterly uncompelling given the content of the rest of the article. Yes, Wikipedia is not a dictionary, but removing stub material isn't the way articles are improved. "Sortie" in the context of a siege is the original meaning of the term and if this article is going to exist (and I'm not saying it necessarily does), it needs that information in it. Inadequate scope[edit]

The definition given here is inadequate; the term is used in civilian contexts, not just military. It is used in space flight, and also in civilian aviation. In an Airbus certification flight test program, for example, the test lasts for an extended duration and contains several test flights, each of which has been referred to as a sortie.
