Maybe an article what exactly does "308 kbit/s" actually mean. For instance: how many discrete air pressures does a speaker create if user with such a bitrate. There are already articles about digital audio, bitrate, and specific encodings like LPCM, MP3, and so on. Speakers and air pressure are completely unrelated to these things; they operate in the analog domain. Playback of digital audio data involves converting the data to a format which a DAC in your CD player or soundcard then transforms into an analog electrical signal (which will have smooth voltage variations). This signal is typically fed to an audio amplifier in order to drive speakers. The motion of the speakers correlate with the shape of the signal, of course, but there's no correlation between those things and the format or bitrate of the digital audio data.
In other words, this article (about sound quality) doesn't need to cover these topics, and I don't think the other articles need to be changed, either. What you're looking for is more of a general primer on digital audio. Maybe do a web search for that. Hope this helps. —mjb (talk) 08:53, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Overall quality[edit]

Nearly every sentence in this article has claims which are either unbacked or plain wrong. Please consider deletion of this page, in favour of a complete rewrite. Kohlrabi (talk) 08:42, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I went through and removed some of the more obviously incorrect things from the article, but its still really bad. Half of the content is basically irrelevant to audio quality, and much of the stuff that is relevant is so poorly explained its almost useless.
I'd like to reorganize this article into two basic sections, one on the accuracy of audio reproduction, and one on perceived quality or enjoyment. Then just remove all the irrelevant stuff (like the 'delivered audio quality').

Disambiguation[edit]

I don't know how to create a disambiguation page, but one might be needed. This article speaks very generally to the quality or fidelity of sound reproduction. There is an entirely different meaning, common in psychoacoustics and product design, for example to judge the annoyance of the 'clank' resonance of a car door closing versus the same door with some damping material applied. There are national standards for a few of the commonly used sound quality (SQ) metrics, such as harshness, roughness and fluctuation strength. Any modern textbook on psychoacoustics discusses them. Other SQ metrics are commonly defined by reference to textbooks and papers that have advanced the concepts over the past decades. Does anyone want to help expand this?
