Ah Cha[edit]

- A question about the term "ah cha (阿差)"; could we have some elaboration on its English translation and why it might be derogatory? --Peej 03:21, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]


- The term "Ah Cha (阿差)", is derogatory and its use should be avoided. It has the same effect as referring to a Chinese person as "Chinese Pig (大陸豬)". Due to it's colonial history, the Chinese in Hong Kong like to use derogatory terms when referring to foreigners. Chinese believes terms like Kwai-Lo (Devil White Man) are not offensive. The term "Ah Cha (阿差)" is seen and understood as exceptionally offensive and ugly. The term is banned by the Broadcasting Authority in Hong Kong and it's use in broadcasting is strictly prohibited. Complaints about the use of this word resulted in issuance of warnings to the Broadcasters. The word "Ah 阿" means "The". The word "Cha 差" means "lowly". The use of this term is usually intended to demean and degrade the Indians and Pakistanis and is meant to hurt. This term is used frequently in Hong Kong due to the fact that there are no effective laws against the use in public of derogatory racial epithets Hong Kong except the media. This term is only used in Hong Kong and is not in mainland China. The proper term to refer to Indians is "Indian National 印度人" which is pleasant and easy to use.--Chungkwok 13:53, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]


Sikhs and jains[edit]

Sikhs and jains are religions. You should put a topic called Indians instead. Put tamils under that and the Parisees under that. --Dangerous-Boy 02:11, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Many of them came from parts of British India that are now part of modern-day Pakistan, so I felt it would be more NPOV to refer to them as South Asians and avoid the issue of whether they are Indian or Pakistani.Yuje 01:20, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree it is NPOV to refer to them as South Asians (Desi) and to follow their ethnic/religious self-identifications. As the text states they are not recognized as specifically Indians or Pakistanis by the South Asian countries. Desiphral 22:30, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unless u specify punjabi or guju, that's the best way to describe the race of people that are sikhs and jains in HK. Sikhism and jainism are idealogies, not races. That's like mulsims belong to a race which they are not since there are muslims from all over the world. Most sikhs and jains are indian with very little from pak.--Dangerous-Boy 01:41, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sindhis[edit]

One thing I need to right here is that the Sindhis section should not be written diffrent from Hindus section cause Sindhi is not a religion rather it is a language of both India and Pakistan just as Punjabi is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.219.199.194 (talk) 12:42, 25 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There's an Indian joke floating around the internet which pokes fun at the characteristics of the various subethnicities in India. One part of the joke states: "One Sindhi is a currency racket; Two Sindhis are a papad factory; Three Sindhis are a duplicate goods shop; Four Sindhis are the Hong Kong Retail Traders Association." Don't know if it's encyclopedic to cite in the main article (though it's a decently widespread joke, 490 ghits [1]), so I thought I'd put it here --- at the very least, it points to an awareness among the worldwide Indian diaspora that the Sindhis play an important role in HK's commerce. cab 12:42, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

At the end of 2001, there were more than 525,000 expatriates living in Hong Kong, in which more than 235,000 expatriates [1] were from the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka and Nepal. More than 50,000 of the population is made up of Indians.[2]

maybe can improve this section. i dont understand why the bolded words above need to be mentioned. phils, indo, and thais, are not south asians. kawaputra 15:12, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agree, unfortunately it's not the fault of the editors here, but rather the government statistics which inexplicably lump all those groups together. "Good enough for government work" ... cab 04:17, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Fortunately, it looks like the government got a clue in the 2006 by-census. Bangladeshis and Sri Lankans would appear to be lumped into the "Other Asian" category, meaning they're individually smaller than the smallest group broken out on its own (Koreans, who had 4,812 residents). cab (talk) 08:15, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
