Gravity. It was a hydroelectric plant, that's why it was built right next to St. Anthony Falls on the Mississippi River. Later, it was converted to burn either coal or wood, though it mostly used coal (wood was no longer in such great supply in the Minneapolis area in the 1930's).T-bonham 02:20, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm pretty sure the plant was originally designed to burn coal, and has always done so as long as it's been in operation. Today, however, it's limited to 30% energy from coal, so it runs mostly on (I believe) #2 fuel oil.
