Question[edit]

According to a new Yorker article, the third enclosed mall was built in Hayward, and had the first ring road around it. Is this the Southland mall? If so we should mention it here. If not, which is it? The Bay Fair Mall? If it is the southland mall we should probably build a page about the southland mall also mentioning it.

It was the Southland Mall, but there needs to be a reference. I was unable to find any information on the Internet. --TruckOttr 19:38, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Truth be told, I've looked into it more and I think I was mislead by the article. I still think the southland mall was the first mall with a ring road around it (perhaps this is still an interesting fact), but I believe that the southland mall was not the third enclosed mall in the world but rather the third enclosed mall mentioned in the article. In fact, I believe that the bay fair mall (near Hayward) is older than the southland mall. I still would be interested in someone clarifying this, and entering whatever comes out of it in the article.

Interesting. I mostly changed my opinion on the fact that the Bay Fair mall was older, but perhaps I was correct at first. I believe that the New Yorker article is still online, but it does not mention the Southland Mall by name, so it isn't the best reference. The dates that the malls were created can often be found online at the architects homepage.

Here is the New Yorker article. Many of the facts are verified, but two important ones aren't. First, they never mention the Southland Mall by name (they just talk about Hayward) and second, they imply but don't state that this is the third enclosed mall. At any rate, the url is http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/?040315fa_fact1.

Looking at google maps, southland is most definitely circled by a road, but even today bayfair is not truly circled. Still, we do need a reference saying so.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 04:45, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
