Baseball as National Sport

Baseball is considered Japan's national sport. Really? Who says? Sumo is the official national sport, though less popular than baseball. Baseball is fast loosing ground to soccer especially among younger Japanese.

Ekiden/relay race

This page lists ekiden as an original Japanese sport, rather than imported. I thought ekiden was simply a relay race. Is it truly original, or imported, or are there significant differences in the Japanese variety (other than the place)? Fg2 05:34, Sep 9, 2004 (UTC)

It may be, but I don't think any other place let ekiden broadcasted live for the entire proceeding, often lasting more than 3 hours. The most famous ekiden race, Hakone Ekiden traces the route that has been in use for over a 1300 years and the race itself is more than 50 years old. It's broadcasted live for over 7 hours. Mixed Martial Arts and kickboxing?

I thought the Pride Fighting Championship and K-1 were huge over in Japan. Don't they deserve mention too?

Sumo Wikiproject

I have made a proposal for a Sumo Wikiproject here at WikiProject Sumo Proposal. Yesterday I spent part of the day sourcing Akebono with a few other people after its repeated blanking due to lack of sources. Most sumo articles are not well sourced. Though under two WikiProjects already, I think it would be to the advantage of both the articles of sumo and wikipedia as a whole if Sumo is placed under its own WikiProject. Volleyball?

Volleyball is a very popular sport, even if not a major professional sport, its played alot in Japanese high schools and there are tournaments around the country. It is frequently said (see google) that go is the national game of Japan. Is this mistaken, or informal, or in Japanese is there both a national "sport" (sumo) and also distinctly a national "game", or perhaps does the accolade simply lack the exclusitivity implied in English?
