Cleanup

This article is a bit of a train wreck. Anyone want to clean it up a bit? 11/17/05

Amen. I don't know why I put it on my watchlist, but I did, and it's sort of grown into this tangled mass of... whatever. The point is, I'd been afraid to tackle it, and I can't say I like thinking about Spongebob Squarepants more than I have to... but perhaps it's time. I'll start working on it sometime this weekend. --NymphadoraTonks 22:54, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

Talent

In the Spongebob episode "Artist Unkown", near the end of the episode Squidward "creates" a sculpture in his anger. I think this suggests he does have hidden talent.71.241.139.170 21:31, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Article quality

Can we get more objective and factual writing? "Squidward's character [...] like the show, presents a rich social commentary. There is much to dislike about Squidward, and yet he is ultimately endearing." - interesting, but that doesn't actually say anything. This article presents a minute amount of facts and forces the reader to wade through tons of subjective and meaningless text. Can we get this heavily cut down? +Hexagon1 (t) 09:14, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

2031

This date isn't accurate, but what date is?

The dates 'March 7' and 'March 14' are accurate, but the year should be 2031. If you want an explanation, then read on. The date 'March 7' is obtained from SpongeBob's calendar, and 'March 14' is obtained from the fact that SpongeBob got the job six days after King Neptune froze Mr. Krabs (Which was March 8). In the movie, SpongeBob revealed that he had 374 employee of the month awards. The date in which the awards are given out is the 27th of every month, so SpongeBob would've got his job between December 28-31 1999. Based on these calculations, we can assume that the year that SpongeBob became manager of the Krusty Krab 2 (And also the year that the movie is set in) is in fact AD 2031. Hugh Jass 10:39, 10 September 2005 (UTC)

of course, the number of awards could have been an exaggeration.Lima bean of the north 06:23, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Squid's middle name

Whoever is saying that Squidward's middle name is Johanssen needs to provide a source if that really is his middle name. Bowsy (review me!) 19:59, 20 February 2007 (UTC) This anonymous editor shares the same sentiment for someone who added the middle name "Quincy". Quite honestly, I do not understand why people should find this so difficult to follow, especially when one would expect a failing grade if treating a school essay with the same lack of detail. 11:11, 14 February 2011 (EST) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.227.89.33 (talk)

Talent?

In the episode where Plankton ends up getting the Chum Bucket taken apart, Squidward uses its parts to create art in the Krusty Krab and it is apparently well-liked. Also, in his anger in the art school episode he does create a great sculpture. Perhaps the article should reference his occasional bursts of talent? Also, theres no reference to his love of dancing either. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.192.80.129 (talk) 17:44, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

I have proposed a massive cutting down of the Spongebob series of articles at the WikiProject talk page. No one responded, and since silence equals consensus, I shall be performing my proposal soon. I am leaving this notice on every page that would be affected, as to make sure enough people would be informed. Fair use rationale for Image:Squid.GIF

Image:Squid.GIF is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Dibs. -- Zanimum (talk) 18:32, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

You need to archive the talk page, discussion from 2005 to 2007 is worth keeping, but of little relevance in the active work on the article.

Reception

  • "I probably would react to him like Squidward does [laughter]." This quote is painfully dependant on square brackets. Is anything truly added to the quote by the last word?
    • Remove that bracketed word.
  • Have you gone through the reviews cited in the article for the first season of SpongeBob? I'm just wondering if there's any commentary on the character by actual newspapers? The opinions of Treadway and Filucci are valid inclusions, but there must be something in the New York Times or something.
    • Added some reviews. Check them!
  • The 11 minutes quote is quite clever, when you really think about the format of the program. But I don't see why this is in reception? Is it any surprise that a quote from the third most important character in the series is in a top 10 list? All this tells us is that she really likes one of thousands of lines he's said.
    • Removed.
  • "that studio" ambiguous. Where the award ceremony was being filmed? The Nickelodeon animation studio? The Garfield animation studio?
  • "this type of award": Tom Kenny was nominated for Annies before Rodger was nominated for an Emmy. I've reworded the sentence.
    • Thanks!
  • I've delinked Sierra Filucci, as she doesn't qualify for an article.
    • Thanks!

Squidward's Species Contradiction

Although it has been stated that Squidward is an octopus, there are at least two occasions in the cartoon that contradict this. When the Krusty Krab gets an order for a "Krusty Krab Pizza", Mr. Krabs says that their delivery SQUID (not delivery octopus) will bring it to them. Also, when Spongebob thinks that he's transformed Squidward into ice cream, he says that he will then change him back into SQUID form. Kryptid 18:21, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, this is unusual. Is there any verification to say Squidward is an octopus? Bowsy (review me!) 10:12, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
Stephen Hillenburg is verification that Squidward is an Octopus. As seen on the SpongeBob Movie DVD. -AMK152(TalkContributionsSend message) 21:12, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, he said that Squidward was an Octopus, but having "Octoward" didn't sound good, so they changed his name to Squidward to make it sound better. I got that from the SpongeBob movie DVD too. Captain Drake Van Hellsing 09:27, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

I personally don't understand why, if Squidward is an Octopus, he only has 6 tentacles, and he can't have lost two of them as his mother also has only two. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Discdeath (talkcontribs) 21:04, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

It was apparently a drawing issue. Similar to the way most cartoon humans have four fingers on each hand, eight tentacles made him look too cumbersome, so they bumped him down to six. Also, we have to be careful not to impose our conceptions of reality on a cartoon series. You might also ask how a crab could be the father of a whale. -- But|seriously|folks  21:33, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
  • The reason why most cartoon characters are missing two fingers is because of pure laziness. In Correct (talk) 12:24, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
  • The characters of Squidward's species are called SQUIDS, although they look like octopuses and there are background characters which look like squids. I read someplace Squidward and is meant to be an octopus, but I don't remember where. In Correct (talk) 12:23, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

CITATION NEEDED

Edit wars are going on whether Squidward is a squidward or an octopus or a squid. I will leave it as octopus, but I am adding a citation needed in every mentioning. DO NOT REVERT IT. This information must have verification or his species should be deleted entirely from the articles. In Correct (talk) 12:23, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

  • I found two sources already in this article. The first source won't work since somebody paraphrased Stephen Hillenburg's words. "[octopus]" does not establish that Squidward and his species are based from octopus! In Correct (talk) 15:28, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
  • The second source verifies that there is a conflict between Hillenburg and Nickelodeon of what Squidward is supposed to be.
  • This is not a fansite. I do not know or care what Henry The Hexapod is. I do not care if he is deformed. This needs to be removed from the article and it is not an acceptable source that proves Squidward is an octopus. In Correct (talk) 15:28, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
  • and in conclusion, all mentionings of Squidward being a squid or octopus need to be REMOVED from Wikipedia until a source can be used which can prove what his species is supposed to be. The list of Arthur characters article states that no animal species needs to be added to the character unless a reliable source can verify it. In Correct (talk) 15:28, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
You're being a bit presumptious here.
In reverse order: WP:OTHERSTUFF exists, and clearly states that just because something exists (or doesn't exist) in article "A" is no argument that it should (or shouldn't) exist in article "B". What happens in the list of Arthur characters has no bearing on what happens here. If you are concerned with the list of Arthur characters - take it up there, not here.
Just because you don't know about Henry the Hexapus (not "hexapod") does not make it non-notable - and if you did read up on it, you'd understand why the inclusion is warranted. Although it's ambiguous over his species, octopus seems more warranted, and intended, ergo the octopus reference is warranted.
Don't be adding a reference for every instance of octopus. It's not necessary, and will make the article worse, not better, no matter how well intentioned. The whole point of a source/reference is that once it's been established - ie the first mention - it doesn't need to be referenced again. If you do as you claim, it will be reverted, despite your demand against it.
Finally - it's a bit confusing, but you seem to be adding a sig after every one of your paragraphs. This is very confusing, because it makes it hard for an editor to know if you're making separate posts, or a single post. Chaheel Riens (talk) 19:13, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
How does the discovery of Henry the Hexapus prove that Squidward AND EVER OTHER SIMILAR CHARACTER as being some kind of deformed octopus?! This is an unacceptable source to verify what Squidward is supposed to be. There needs to be verifiable source given or it should be removed. In Correct (talk) 23:42, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
I reread Henry the Hexapus and so he was discovered in 2008?! Yet this TV series dates back to 1999. Henry the Hexapus should have no connection with Squidward and Henry the Hexapus is a horrible reference. I did not know that Wikipedia articles could be used as a reference for other Wikipedia articles. There is a widespread question of whether Squidward is a squid or octopus. Is there any reason why a citation should not be added to for example: "Despite his name, he is an octopus." ?! In Correct (talk) 00:02, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

@In Correct: Have you read reliable sources/articles that say Squidward is not an octopus? Can you cite some great sources that say he is a "hexapus" or a squid? I don't think there exist such sources. Here are some sources that actually tell the character is not a squid, not a hexapus, but an octopus:

Are we good, In Correct? — Mediran [talk] 12:04, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

Squidward does not have tentacles

Please could this article reflect the facts that despite his name, Squidward Tentacles is neither a squid and neither does he posses any tentacles. He has 6 arms, 4 of which are adapted as legs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by The oracle 2015 (talkcontribs) 18:56, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

In support, aside from the fact real world octopuses have no tentacles, check this part transcript from the episode "The Paper" where reference is made to Squidward's 6 arms - "Squidward: Hey, SpongeBob, top this one. (takes out a centriloquist doll that looks exactly like him) Hey, little Squidward, what’s grey and ugly and has six arms? Little Squidward: I don’t know, but have you looked in the mirror lately?" @EvergreenFir: Tentacles are long and thin and tend only to have a few suckers at the ends. A squid has 2 tentacles and an octopus has none. Both have 8 arms. Cephalopod arms have suckers all the way down. The oracle 2015 (talk) 23:50, 23 April 2015 (UTC)

Creepypasta?

Do we really need this at all? A promptly deleted YouTube video, from an unknown source, making bizarre and utterly implausible claims, which garnered only minor attention, does not seem to merit coverage here. People put junk on YouTube all the time and the worst of it gets removed for various reasons. That generally isn't notable. --DanielRigal (talk) 13:07, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
