Origin of Name[edit]

St. George, Utah resides in Washington county. Is this in reference to George Washington, President of the United States? I don't know if it is, but would like to know, and feel the information would be useful to understand why the town/county was named! MonteShaffer 01:13, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am pretty sure it was named after George Albert Smith, who was a Mormon apostle. --Kmsiever 03:03, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I've added the cited fact in the article. Named after George A. Smith, not his namesake George Albert Smith. –SESmith 08:36, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures of Downtown[edit]

I recently added a photo of Downtown Saint George to the website (in the infobox), but I would really rather have a new, updated photo that better depicts Downtown as it is today. If somebody could find something like that, it would be greatly appreciated VBlack 18:46, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There already was a new picture of downtown today on there. You moved it. MojaveNC 05:55, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Website[edit]

The website http://www.untraveledroad.com/USA/Utah/Washington/StGeorge.htm was recently deleted as "Spam". I, having grown up in St. George, personally feel that it is a relevant and interesting website on which a person can see a few areas of interest in St. Georg and think that it should be added again. What does everyone else think. --Nate 02:50, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you; the person who deleted it deleted it from all of the Utah pages that had it, though, and I don't want to take the time to add them all back. I don't know why he thought it was spam. bob rulz 02:53, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I believe I'm the one that deleted the links. They were in violation of WP:EL - in particular this clause that states that a site should not be linked to if "A website that you own or maintain, even if the guidelines above imply that it should be linked to. This is because of neutrality and point-of-view concerns; neutrality is an important objective at Wikipedia, and a difficult one. If it is relevant and informative, mention it on the talk page and let other — neutral — Wikipedia editors decide whether to add the link.". The owner of untraveled road linked more than 100 articles to his site. In his dialog with me he is clear that the primary reason is to drive traffic and create revenue - to support the site, which is a nice site. My main concern is not the spam, it's the fact that he, the owner of the site, did the massive linking. If anyone things the site is a valuable addition to an article then I see no problem with adding the links back. Also, the untraveled road site owner, who initially created all the links, called me a vigilante after I deleted them, but in fact, I only deleted the links after a discussion on the talk page of the wikipedia spam project. Brian 03:21, 21 August 2006 (UTC)btball[reply]
Ah, I didn't realize that the owner of the website was the one who added the links in. I personally think they're cool and informative, if it's the website I think it is (I just tried the link and it didn't work). bob rulz 03:36, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the input! I like the site, but I'll let other people decide if it should be re-added. --Nate 17:00, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

St. George was 2nd fastest growing Metro area as of 9/05[edit]

According to documents published by the U.S. Census Bureau dated September 2005 the fastest growing Metro Area in the country was Greeley, CO. Las Vegas, NV was 3rd and St. George, UT was 2nd.

Can you back that up with a reference? Jaxad0127 19:35, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll look into it, but I remember reading in the newspaper that it was the second-fastest growing. The newspaper can get its facts wrong, though. bob rulz 00:10, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Here's the website of the official release from the cenus bureau [1] --Nate 19:50, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bloomington[edit]

As I recall St. George annexed Bloomington. Is this true? Would someone like to create a re-direct from Bloomington to St. George/add a Bloomington section?--71.213.74.70 19:15, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bloomington has been within the St. George city limits for as long as I can remember. MojaveNC 05:56, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:SaintGeorgeSeal.jpg[edit]

Image:SaintGeorgeSeal.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Population Estimate Abuse[edit]

Someone on here seems to be on a mission to overstate St. George's population. It keeps having to be reverted back. The major consensus typically used for population estimates is the U.S Census Bureau, which does it yearly on July 1st. Unless estimated by another source, such as from the city, then that is what should be used. I also don't think there's a need to keep indicated what the population 'may be' in 2010, 2020, or even 2050 for that matter. Estimates are speculative. Anyway, if they keep doing it we should report it as abuse. --UtahStizzle (talk) 23:17, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Airport[edit]

You should note that St. George, Utah is building a new airport at a cost of approximately 140 million dollars. Suggest you contact Gary Esplin, City Manager and get the accurate information to update this event. The airport is planned to open in January of 2010 and is currently under way. An impressive site (sight). Huge economic benefits to St. George, Southern Utah and all of Utah. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.126.225.212 (talk) 02:52, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to attempt to get out to the new airport for some pictures in the next few days. I'll replace the old ones when I do. --Manway (talk) 08:18, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nuclear contamination update[edit]

Can someone who knows about this elaborate on the nuclear contamination section. The article cites a 1962 study but there is no follow up. How is the town now? Birth defects? A Western Chernobyl? Are memories of the incident still raw, with everyone angry at the government, or has it all been consigned to history? There must have been health studies done over the years to assess the scale of the damage. It would be interesting to know what they concluded. Old Man of Storr (talk) 20:30, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There is quite a bit of info at ir.library.oregonstate.edu/dspace/bitstream/1957/9293/1/thesisblairdoc.pdf . Basically it is still very contaminated but the level is not very harmful to people. --NDState 21:08, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Dialect[edit]

I came to this page hoping that there would be some mention of the "Dixie" dialect mentioned in Bill Bryson's The Mother Tongue (book) as being distinctive of the region. Does it still exist?Tigerboy1966 (talk) 19:03, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In a few cases, yes. But the massive influx of out-of-state people in the last 20 years has diluted it immensely. Say "Hurr-i-cun" and you get looked like as if you lost your mind. Talk about the city up north known as "American Fark" and they'll ask for a translator.
Too bad. I enjoyed listening to the locals int he 1970s and 1980s. --Manway 19:53, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for quick response. It happens all over. In Lancashire we were still using "thee" and "thou" a generation ago. Now it's dying out. Language always changes, I suppose.Tigerboy1966 (talk) 20:31, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

unreferenced peacockery[edit]

This article would make a fine tourist brochure. Only problem is, this is an encyclopedia, not a tourist brochure. To the IP editor who has been adding all this junk, please read some of the Wikipedia policies before continuing. WP:V, WP:NPOV, WP:RS and WP:NOTDIR come to mind right off the top of my head. Considering the inappropriately placed comment removed from the article, WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS would also be a good and educational read. Thanks to the editors who are now watching this article. businesses: what to put in; what to leave out.[edit]

In my travels around Wikiland, I have seen lots of disturbances over this question. IMHO, the best course of action is to decide on an objective standard here and stick to it. I have seen most commonly one of two objective standards. One is to make a list of the 10 largest employers, sourced to a government source and leave it at that. The other is to go with Wikipedia notability as the requirement. That is to say, only list businesses that have Wikipedia articles on them. That is kind of unfair to strictly local businesses, as they are very seldom notable.

For businesses listed in sections other than the "Economy" section, I have found that the best practice is to leave out names completely unless a particular business has a Wikipedia article. You might talk about a mall by saying, "Wikiland Mall has 173 stores, anchored by Sears and J.C. Penny." Instead of trying to list all the golf courses, which is a violation of WP:NOTDIR, just say "There are 37 golf courses, including the host of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Pebble Beach Golf Links." Really to do anything else is to give an unfair advertising advantage to whomever we do list, and things change fast enough that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to keep up.

Comments and discussion are appreciated and encouraged. Gtwfan52 (talk) 06:10, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

St. George Wiki link issue via Facebook[edit]

I have noticed for quite a while now, that on Facebook, you can't properly access St. George's Wikipedia page via clicking on the blue highlighted "St George, Utah" (hometown of individual Facebook user's page). For example, go to your Facebook page or anyone's page and simply click on yours or individual's hometown (highlighted in blue) in this case "St. George, Utah", and the city's Wiki info is not able to be accessed for anyone to see. Any idea on how to fix the problem? Any other city aka individual's hometown highlighted blue on Facebook brings up their full Wiki page when clicked on. Thanks

First off, this page is for the discussion of improvements or changes to the Wikipedia article on St George. Nothing else. That being said, you might notice that you typed St. George two different ways above. Therein may lie your answer. If that doesn't clear things up, ask on Facebook. I was always told that St. George, Utah, was named for Philip St. George Cooke who "led the Mormon Battalion from Santa Fe to California." 136.60.139.97 (talk) 04:55, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nuclear Test Site[edit]

St George was built and is still being built on a nuclear test site. This nuclear testing was done from the 50’s-60’s. 67.2.163.127 (talk) 04:40, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure how to fix this, so someone will have to do it for me. But the property link (which is dead) should be the following: https://eweb.washco.utah.gov:8443/recorder/taxweb/account.jsp?accountNum=0786204&submit=Public%20Login&guest=true 173.27.50.201 (talk) 23:49, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
