Lack of an apostraphe[edit]
St Brides Major does not have an apostraphe. It is common for apostraphes to be dropped over time in older British place-names, especially around S'Wales.
See St Georges Super Ely for example or Barons Court tube station as opposed to Earl's Court tube station
Please note that an apostraphe is not used on the village website ( http://www.stbridesmajor.co.uk )
or Google-maps, (type in "St Brides Major" on the webpage at http://maps.google.co.uk) although I'll admit Google-maps isn't always the most reliable source for checking place names it is usually a safe bet.
- I notice that the name sign for the village has "St Brides", so I will concede, despite the fact that both the Vale of Glamorgan Council and the St Bride's Major Community Council websites show it with an apostrophe. Deb 11:50, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
The official name is, indeed, St Bride's Major, with an apostrophe, as shown at Census 2001 and Ordnance Survey in addition to the County Borough Council and Community Council websites. I think these official sources are a more reliable indicator than either a privately owned website or an American internet mapping company. Skinsmoke (talk) 18:21, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
