Steam[edit]

This article has an inaccurate reference to Steam, a rivalling digital distribution product.

Quote from StarDock Central Article. "Stardock Central is similar in concept to the Steam content delivery system, however unlike Steam it does not require a permanent connection to the internet and is only required when a user wants to install or update a product it supports (or when a user wants to make use of its chatting, content libraries, or forum support)."

Steam does not require a permanent connection to the internet.

There is (and always has been) an 'offline' mode for users who do not wish to be on-line with steam. All games, once downloaded, are fully playable off-line, excepting multi player only games such as CounterStrike.

Steam will require connection for initial setup of a new account, the purchase or validation of a game, and the downloading and/or update of a game. Obviously, multi player support also requires a connection. This is no different to the functionality in StarDock Central.

Quotes from Steam (content delivery) Article. "It is necessary to validate every Steam game online before it can be launched, although an offline mode is available." "Steam can be set to stay offline and not attempt a connection,[48] but this offline mode has its own restrictions and limitations, including preventing games which have not been updated from running in offline mode."

I would edit the article myself, but I am a bit of a wiki newbie, and would feel more comfortable with someone else dealing with this minor issue untill I am more confident. Thank you. 149.254.200.220 (talk) 22:38, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is largely true, and the comparison needs updating to reflect the presence of this offline mode. I would note that unlike multiplayer games on Steam such as Team Fortress 2, Stardock's multiplayer games do not require Stardock Central to be running; nor to my knowledge does it prevent games (either single-player or multiplayer) from running if they or Stardock Central have not been updated. Does this software still exist in Aug-Sept 2023? Or was it scrapped/retired, please? Naki (talk) 10:07, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
