Anticlockwise?[edit]

How can you define the road, er, highway as turning "anticlockwise" without insisting it be driven in a particular direction (west-to-east)? Is this the preferred direction because of some road-mapping convention, or simply ecause English is written and read left-to-right and the map is oriented with north at the top?
