According to the Walters Website[edit]

Walters says the gesture she’s making with her right hand represents her accepting her role as The Virgin to give birth to the Son of God. Behind the archangel Gabriel is a hortus conclusus (translated from Latin: enclosed garden) meant to represent her virginity.
